초급 대학생을 위한 영어말하기 배치평가 개발 및 타당도 논거

국문 초록

현재 한국인 대학생들이 상당수의 대학교에서 필수 과목으로 지정되어 있는 교양영어강의를 수강할 때 자신의 수준과 맞지 않는 강의에 잘못 배치되어 자신들의 영어 수준이나 강의의 수준과는 무관하게 적절하지 못한 수업을 받고 있는 경우를 어렵지 않게 발견할 수 있다. 또한 교수자들조차도 강의를 듣고 있는 학생들의 수준별 교양영어강의 배치에 만족을 하지 못하고, 실제 강의를 함에 있어서도 잘못된 배치로 인해 강의 시에 어려움을 겪는 경우가 쉽게 확인되고 있다. 이러한 잘못된 배치로 인한 여러 가지 문제점들을 해소하기 위하여, 본 연구에서는 대학교 교양 영어회화강의에 초급수준 대학생들을 적절하게 배치하기 위한 영어말하기시험인 Novice Speakers English Language Test (NSELT)를 직접 개발하기에 이르렀다. 이러한 목적으로 개발된 이 NSELT 영어 말하기 시험은 사전설문조사를 실시하여 학생들이 대학교 생활에 있어 주로 경험하게 되는 일상생활 속의 맥락을 반영한 문항들을 적극 반영하여 적용하였다. 이러한 NSELT는 워밍업, 문장구성하기, 소리내어 읽기, 길안내하기, 그림 묘사하기, 주관식 질문 등으로 구성하였으며, 학생들이 접할 수 있는 있는 친근한 소재를 기반으로 하여 개발하였다. NSELT 시험 시행 결과에 대해 원어민 교수자들과 학생들 모두 만족스러운 반응을 보였고, 그 시험 결과는 원어민 교수자에 의한 교양영어강의의 학생 배치 결과와 높은 상관관계를 보여 주었다. 이 결과는 NSELT가 학생들을 교양영어 강의에 배치함에 있어 효과적이고 신뢰성 있는 배치평가로서 활용의 가능성을 보여주었다.

영문 초록

Recent Korean college students had expressed dissatisfaction about their misplacement in their elective English courses, and their instructors agreed with the misplacement as well. The need to minimize misplacements pushed forth the development of the Novice Speakers’ English Language Test (NSELT) - an English speaking placement test used to diagnose low-level students and place them into elective English courses according to their levels. In the needs analysis stage, students were required to take an English speaking test to determine their levels. The test was equipped with contents ranging in difficulty from beginner level to intermediate level. The speaking test consisted of the following components: warm-up, sentence construction, read-aloud, giving directions, picture descriptions, and open-ended questions regarding the students’ daily routines. The wide range of topics allowed for a more holistic diagnosis of the students communicative abilities by allowing them do demonstrate their speaking abilities in wide range of situations. As a result, both English speaking instructors and students expressed satisfaction with the NSELT. The test results showed a strong correlation with their placement results and their assigned elective English courses in the second semester. The results implied that the NSELT has strong potential to be used as an effective and reliable placement tool for placing students into the most appropriately leveled elective English courses.
