대학 토론대회 운영 현황 및 시사점

국문 초록

고대 그리스에서부터 비판적 사고와 의사소통 능력의 함양을 위한 중요한 활동의 하나로 여겨져 왔던 토론은 현대의 시민사회, 민주사회에 이르러서는 그 의미가 더욱 중요해졌다. 한국에서 대학 토론대회는 1970년대 후반, 대학 연합 토론대회를 시작으로 확대되었다. 다만 초기에는 비판적 사고와 의사소통 능력 강화보다 토론의 문법적 형태를 강조하였다. 1990년대 중반 각 대학마다 토론 동아리 혹은 토론대회 등이 조직되었으며 2000년대에 이르러 토론대회의 질적 수준도 더욱 높아졌다고 볼 수 있다. 또한 전국 대학생을 대상으로 진행되는 토론대회 역시 더욱 다양화되었다. 교내 토론대회를 진행하는 대학은 대표적으로 부산대학교, 숙명여자대학교, 충남대학교, 충북대학교, 단국대학교, 부경대학교 등이 있다. 이중에서도 교내 토론대회를 10년 이상 진행한 대학으로 교내 토론대회의 발전된 모델을 제시하면서 역사적으로 교육적으로도 대표성을 띤다고 볼 수 있는 세 곳 대학을 선정해서 비교분석을 진행하고자 한다. 이로써 본고에서는 부산대학교, 숙명여자대학교, 충남대학교의 교내 토론대회 운영 현황을 분석하고, 대학 교육에의 시사점을 탐색하고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 해당 대학의 교내 토론대회 운영 현황을 분석하기 위해서 각 대학의 독서토론대회 운영 실무자와의 인터뷰 및 웹사이트에 게시된 토론대회 자료에 관한 내용 분석(Content Analysis) 방법을 수행하였다. 이러한 현황 조사는 대학 교내 토론대회에 대한 이해를 높이고, 대학 교육에 있어서의 토론의 중요성을 환기시키며, 교육적 함의를 재확인하는 등 시사점을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Debate, regarded since ancient Greece as one of the important activities for cultivating critical thinking and communication skills, has become more important in modern civil society and democratic society. University debate competitions in Korea expanded in the late 1970s starting with the university union debate competition. However, in the early days, the grammatical form of discussion was emphasized rather than the strength of critical thinking and communication skills. Debate clubs or debate competitions were organized in each university in the mid-1990s, and by the 2000s, the quality of the debate competitions was high. Debate competitions for university students nationwide have also become more diversified. Busan National University, Sookmyung Women’s University, Chungnam National University, Chungbuk National University, Dankook University, and Pukyong National University are representative universities that have held on-campus debate competitions for more than 10 years. Among them, we would like to conduct a comparative analysis by selecting three universities that are historically and educationally representative while presenting an advanced model for on-campus debate competitions as universities that have held such competitions for more than 10 years. As a result, this paper aims to analyze the current status of on-campus debate competitions at Busan National University, Sookmyung Women’s University, and Chungnam National University and to explore implications for university education. In order to analyze the current status of the university's in-school discussion competitions, in this study interviews were conducted with practitioners of reading discussion competitions at each university and a content analysis method of discussion competition data posted on their websites was performed. The status survey can provide several improvements such as enhancing the understanding of university discussion competitions, reminding the importance of discussions in university education, and reaffirming educational implications.
