대학 영작문 교과목에서 자동번역기 활용법 개선을 위한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국인 대학생 학습자의 온라인 자동번역기 사용에 대한 인식과 사용실태를 조사하고 영어 작문 시 효과적인 번역기 사용법을 제시하여 그 학습 효과를 알아보는 것이 목적이다. 서울의 한 대학 신입생 141명이 연구에 참여하여 자동번역기 사용실태에 대한 설문에 답하고, 본 연구에서 제안한 방식대로 번역기를 사용하여 영어 글을 쓴 후 그 학습 효과에 대해서 답변해 주었다. 그 결과, 대학생 학습자는 이전부터 번역기 사용에 매우 익숙하며 현재 수강하는 영작문 수업에서 대다수가 번역기를 빈번히 사용하여 과제를 완성하였다. 이들은 어휘 사용에 도움을 받고 신속함과 편리함에 만족하였으나 번역 결과의 옳고 그름을 판단할 실력이 없고 사용 당위성에 의문을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 새롭게 제시한 방법으로 번역기를 사용하여 영작문을 실시한 후 참여자는 영작문의 질과 내용 보충에 도움을 받았고 어휘와 표현 및 문법과 문장 구조 학습에도 도움을 받았다는 의견을 보여주었다. 이들은 기존의 방법과 다르게 자신이 직접 영어로 작문한 후 번역기를 활용하며 수정 과정을 거치니 충분한 시간을 가지고 자신의 문장에 대해 깊이 생각할 수 있어 자신의 주도하에 번역기를 보조 도구로 활용하여 영작문을 완성한 것에 만족한다고 답변하였다. 본 연구는 온라인 자동번역기가 일상화된 학습자에게 번역기를 학습 도구로서 의미있게 활용할 수 있는 방법을 제안하고 그 학습 효과에 대해 긍정적인 반응을 확인한 것에 의의가 있다고 하겠다. 향후 영작문 학습 뿐 아니라 다른 언어 학습 영역에도 적절하고 다양한 번역기의 활용법이 제안되어야 할 것이며 초급 학습자 뿐 아니라 다양한 수준의 대상에게 맞는 적절한 방법을 고안하여 학습 현장에서 사용할 것을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the perception of Korean university students regarding online automatic translators (ATs) and the effect of ATs on their learning of English writing. A total of 141 university freshmen students participated in the study by answering two sets of survey questionnaires and writing an English essay with the help of an AT. A method of using an AT during writing an essay was also developed in this study. The results show that students have been accustomed to using ATs, and most of them even frequently use ATs while doing writing assignments for their English classes at university. Students use ATs because they are satisfied with the speed and convenience of ATs, as well as their helpfulness in the use of vocabulary. Despite their frequent use of ATs, students commented that they are not able to judge the correctness of the translation results and had questions about the justification of its use. After conducting English composition using an AT while following the newly proposed method in this study, participants reported that they were helped to supplement the quality and content of the essay and also to learn vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure. With the newly proposed method, they could write the first draft in English on their own, and then they took enough time to think deeply about their essay through the revision process using an AT. This study is meaningful in that ATs were confirmed to be effective as an educational tool rather than as a translator itself for students to learn English writing. Finally, this study suggests that various educational methods of using ATs should be devised for other fields of language learning and for other levels of students.
