1970년대 ‘여공’의 욕망과 문학적 재현의 문제

국문 초록

이 논문은 1970년대 한국 사회의 산업화 및 노동운동의 주역이기도 했던 여성 노동자의 존재가 동시대 문학에서 적극적으로 형상화되지 않았다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 1970년대 대표적인 남성 작가들이 다루었던 ‘하층 여성’의 표상은 대부분 호스티스와 같은 매춘 여성들이었고, 그들의 소설에서 ‘여공’들의 모습은 좀처럼 찾아볼 수 없다. 이에 최근의 연구들은 1970~80년대 여성 노동자들의 수기를 중심으로 여공들의 글쓰기에서 나타나는 자기-재현의 문제와 문학적 실천성에 주목하고 있다. 그렇다면 자기-재현의 형식을 거치거나 남성 작가들에 의해 희생자로 묘사되지 않는 여공의 문학적 재현은 어떻게 설명될 수 있는가. 그러한 질문에 대한 하나의 답으로서 본 논문은 한수산의 장편소설 『달이 뜨면 가리라』에 주목하였다. 한수산의 소설 속에 재현되는 여공들의 일과 생활, 그들이 처한 다양하고도 복잡한 좌표는 ‘여공’을 수동적 대상으로 재현하거나 적극적인 저항의 주체로 환원하는 기존 담론들을 넘어서며 새로운 비평적 문제틀을 요구한다. 소설 속 여공들은 산업화 시기 자유주의 논리에 따라 스스로를 경영하는 ‘호모 에코노미쿠스’로서 계층 상승의 욕망을 품은 속물이기도 하고, 동시에 자신의 몸을 둘러싸고 생산되는 성적･계급적 낙인을 인식하고 그것을 거부하는 일탈적 존재이기도 하다. 본 논문은 이들의 목소리가 초점 화자로 설정된 지식인 주체 또는 서술자의 ‘복화술’을 뚫고 돌출하는 순간을 포착해내고자 했다. 이를 통해 한수산 소설이 보여주는 여공 재현의 의의를 발견하고, 이 소설이 대중문학의 영역을 넘어 노동문학의 자장 안에서도 읽힐 필요가 있음을 주장하였다.

영문 초록

This paper began with the awareness that the existence of female workers, who took a leading role in the industrialization and labor movement of Korean society in the 1970s, were not actively embodied in contemporary literature. Most of the representative male writers in the 1970s described “lower-class women” as prostitutes like hostesses, and it is hard to find “female workers” in their novels. In contrast, recent researches are focusing on the self-representation and literary practicality of female workers’ compositions from the 1970s to 1980s. But here is another question: How can we explain the literary representation of female workers who are not portrayed as victims by male writers? As an answer to such a question, this paper focused on Han Soo-san’s novel, I Wll Go When the Moon Rises. The diverse and complex coordinates of the women’s work and life represented in Han Soo-san’s novel demand a new critical problem framework beyond the existing discourse that reproduces the women as passive objects or reduces it to active resistance. The women in the novel are snobs who have a desire to rise in class as Homo Economicus who manage themselves according to the liberal logic of the industrialization period, and at the same time are deviant who recognize and reject the grade and class brand produced around their bodies. The moment they stand out as individuals with their own desires can be said to be the significance of representation of female workers, shown in Han Soo-san’s novel.
