국문 초록

본 연구는 오영석의 ｢신약창세기｣를 상세히 분석하여 1970년대에 나타난 과학소설로서의 의미를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 1960-70년대 다른 과학소설과 비교 분석하여 과학소설이 당대 현실을 재현하고 비판하는 하나의 전략으로 어떻게 기능하고 있는지를 살폈고, 나아가 현실에 대한 부정과 유토피아/디스토피아의 상상이 SF의 형식으로 서사화되는 과정에서 부딪치게 되는 딜레마에 대해 논의하였다. ｢신약창세기｣는 당대 이슈가 된 인체냉동보존술(cryonics)을 모티프로 미래세계를 그린 첫 작품으로, 인공동면을 다룬 문윤성의 ｢완전사회｣와 일견 유사하다. 냉동인간이 된 주인공은 100년 후인 2071년에 깨어나 기술 유토피아가 된 한국의 ‘초현대’를 경험한다. 낙관적 과학주의가 기저에 깔려 있으나, 한편에서 과학적 디스토피아를 그리려는 부정적 비전이 충돌하고 있음이 확인된다. 이 소설은 제7대 대통령선거와 취임의 실제 사건을 시간적 배경으로 삼아 선거 부정 문제를 우회적으로 비판하며, 사회 각계에서 비리와 부정이 난무하였음을 구체적 사건으로 제시한다. 문단의 평가에 불만을 가진 실패한 소설가였던 주인공은 미래세계에서 정통파 작가로 추앙받고 건강한 신체를 얻지만, 갈등도 고통도 없어 진정한 소설가의 역할이 불필요한 무력한 과거인이 되어 자살한다. 제목과 복선을 통해 과학적 낙관주의와 기독교적 종말론을 연결하고 의미를 부여하고 있으나, 소설가소설로서 ‘나’의 부각이 부정한 과거의 동경과 복귀의 소망이라는 파행적 마무리로 향하게 한 것이다. 이 소설은 변혁을 꿈꿀 수 없는 시대에 SF가 현실을 우회적으로 비판하는 새로운 서사 전략이 될 가능성과 동시에 기술 유토피아에 대한 부정적 비전이 자칫 당대 가치와 현실에 대한 긍정으로 향할 수 있다는 딜레마도 보여주었다. 유감스럽게도 이것은 1960-70년대 SF가 보여준 사회문화적 상상력의 임계점이었다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze Oh Young-seok’s “The Genesis of the New Testament” in detail and to reveal its meaning as a science fiction that appeared in the 1970s, a period of hiatus for science fiction. To this end, it compares and analyzes with other science fiction in the 1960s and 1970s, and examines how science fiction functions as a strategy to reproduce and criticize the reality of the time. Furthermore, we will think about the dilemma encountered in the process of denial of reality and utopian/dystopian imagination being narrated in the form of sci-fi. “The Genesis of the New Testament” is the first work depicting the future world with the motif of cryonics, which became an issue at that time, and it is at a glance similar to Yunseong Moon’s Perfect Society, which deals with artificial hibernation. The protagonist wakes up in 2071, 100 years later, and experiences Korea’s ‘ultra-modern’, which has become a technological utopia. Although optimistic scientism is underlying in imagining the future, it is confirmed that this conflicts with the negative vision of a scientific dystopia. Using the real events of the 7th presidential election and inauguration as a temporal background, this novel criticizes the issue of election fraud in a detour, and concretely suggests in conversations with future people that corruption and injustice have been rampant in all areas of society. The protagonist, who was a failed novelist, is revered as an orthodox writer in the future world and gains a healthy body. But there is no conflict or pain, so the role of a true novelist is unnecessary. Eventually, he becomes a helpless past man and commits suicide. Through the title and foreshadowing, scientific optimism and Christian eschatology are linked and given meaning, but as a novelist novel, the desire of ‘I’ is directed toward the lame ending of the longing of the past and the hope of restoration. This novel showed the potential of science fiction as a new narrative strategy that indirectly criticizes reality in an era where transformation cannot be dreamed of, and the dilemma that a negative vision of a technological utopia can become an affirmation of contemporary values and reality. Unfortunately, this was the critical point of the socio-cultural imagination shown by science fiction in the 1960s and 1970s.
