국문 초록

철도로부터 연유한 한국 근대문학의 상상력이 ‘문명화’라는 의미망을 넘어서 동시다발적으로 촉발된 것은 1920년대 중후반을 지나면서다. 제국/식민지라는 사회･역사적 조건에 각자의 방식으로 연동되어 있던 당대 작가들에게 동아시아 국제철도망의 구축은 피할 수 없는 사건이자 복합적인 ‘세계감’을 구성하는 원천이었다. 따라서 철도로 인한 시공간의 재구성이 그들의 텍스트에 어떤 방식으로 계기화되는지, 나아가 이 과정에서 철도 표상의 의미가 어떻게 분화하는지 검토하기 위해서는 개인을 넘어선 문학 네트워크의 다층성을 고려해야 한다. 요컨대 동시대 작가들의 ‘세계감’이 새겨진 텍스트들의 지형도 속에서 동아시아 철도망의 의미가 제국/식민지의 위계와 만나며 굴절되는 양상을 종합적으로 살필 수 있어야 한다는 말이다. 이런 맥락에서 1920년대 중후반 발표된 정지용, 김소월, 박팔양의 ‘기차’ 관련 시편은 주요한 텍스트다. 이들의 작품을 지나며 앞세대 작가들로부터 ‘분절’된 ‘철도’ 표상이 본격화하기 때문이다. 그중 단연 돋보이는 존재는 교토 유학 시절의 정지용이다. 한정된 시기에 집중된 그의 기차 시편은 조선과 일본의 문학 네트워크 속에서 새롭게 반추될 필요가 있다. 이와 관련하여 김소월의 ‘철도’ 표상, 카프 탈퇴 직후 박팔양이 보여준 ‘기차’ 시편이 지용의 철도와 부딪치며 만들어내는 상호관련성과 그 영향 관계에 주목하고자 했다. 각자의 영역에서 걸출했던 세 작가는 당시로선 찾아보기 어려웠을 여러 유형의 철도, 기차 표상을 시와 소설로 형상화해냈다. 문학적 경향에서 차이가 컸던 시인들이지만 그들의 텍스트에서 철도와 기차가 활용되는 방식은 제국/식민지의 근대 체험이 어떻게 고유한 문학적 정체성으로 전환되는지를 보여주는 준거점으로 삼을 만하다.

영문 초록

It was in the middle and late 1920s that the imagination of modern Korean literature, derived from railroads, went beyond the meaning of ‘civilization’ and sparked simultaneously. The construction of the East Asian international railroad network was an unavoidable event and a source of constituting a sense of the world for the artists of the time, who were linked in their own way to the social and historical conditions of empire/colony. Therefore, in order to examine how the reorganization of space and time caused by railroads is instrumentalized in their texts, and furthermore, how the meaning of railroad representations differentiates in this process, the multilayerity of the literary network that goes beyond individuals must be considered. In other words, it is necessary to comprehensively examine the way in which the meaning of the East Asian railway network meets the hierarchy of empires/colonies and bends in the topographical map of the texts engraved with their own ‘world sense’ by contemporary writers. In this context, the poems about ‘trains’ by Jiyong Jung, Sowol Kim, and Palyang Park published in the middle and late 1920s can be considered as the main subject of review. This is because the representation of the ‘railroad’, which has been ‘articulated’ with the artists of the previous generation, began in earnest through their works. His poems about trains, created during a limited period, need to be discussed anew in the literary networks of Joseon and Japan. In relation to this, I tried to pay attention to the correlation and influence in experiences of cross-border between Sowol’s representation of the ‘railroad’, Palyang’s poems about trains after leaving the KAPF and Jiyong’s poems about railroads. The three writers, who were outstanding in their respective fields, embodied various types of railroads and trains, which were difficult to find at the time, in poetry and novels, and either failed or succeeded. Although these poets differed greatly in their literary tendencies, the way that railroads and trains are used in their texts is worthy of reference to show how the modern experience of the empire/colonial can be transformed into a unique literary identity.
