국문 초록

한말숙의 첫 번째 장편소설인 『하얀 도정』은 그간 논의의 대상으로 크게 주목받지는 못했다. 그러나 이는 한말숙의 1950년대 작품들을 모두 아우르는 것이자 4.19, 5.16 등 한국 현대사의 거대한 경험을 이채롭게 담아낸 작품이기도 하다. 『하얀 도정』은 예술이라는 공통성으로 청년을 묶으며 섬세한 세대 감각을 보여준다. 그러나 주인공 인옥은 남성 인물들과는 달리 예술에 대한 몰입 대신 거듭된 연애하기를 보여주는데, 이는 자신이 그냥 청년이 아닌 ‘청년-여성’임을 자각한 인옥의 예민한 인식에 따른 것이다. 『하얀 도정』은 인옥이 다층적 연애 관계 속에서 선택을 이어가는 모습을 통해 1950년대 후반에서 1960년대 초반 ‘청년-여성’의 정체성 및 삶의 방향 모색 과정을 보여준다. 인옥은 자유연애의 대상이라는 점 외에는 무의미한 형모나 도현과의 관계를 정리하고, 이상적인 남편감인 명규와도 결별을 택한다. 그리고 갑작스럽게 나타난 영환과의 관계를 통해 그 어떤 인정도 필요 없는, 자유로운 개인의 완벽한 연대로서의 연애를 꿈꾼다. 영환 이전의 연애가 합리적 사고에 기반한 계산적인 연애였다면 영환과의 연애는 이와는 사뭇 다르다. 영환과의 연애 과정 속에서 현실의 모든 것은 휘발되며, 이 연애는 둘이 오로지 열정 속으로 긴박되어 가는 과정을 보여준다. 그러나 이 연애는 영환의 죽음으로 인해 결국 실패로 귀결된다. 현실은 휘발되고 감정만 남은, 열정에 긴박되어 가는 이 연애 과정은 곧 혁명의 메타포이자 혁명에 대한 감성이기도 하다. 뜨겁게 사랑했으나, 인옥은 결국 작품의 시작점에서 그러했듯이 마지막에 이르러서도 하얀 길 위에 혼자 서게 된다. 인옥이 다시 걷게 된 이 하얀 길은 처음과 동일한 것처럼 보이지만, 이는 ‘차이 나는 반복’이다. 다시 마주하게 된 하얀 길은 ‘열심’이나 진보, 자신의 위치에 대한 냉소적 자각 등과의 어려운 결별을 통해서 비로소 이르게 된 자리이며, 따라서 작품의 마지막에 이르러 인옥이 혼자 내딛는 걸음은 처음과는 달리 자신만의 길을 걷겠다는 의지를 품은 것이기 때문이다.

영문 초록

Han Mal-sook’s White Road has not received the attention of researchers. However, the novel encompasses Han Mal-sook’s entire 1950s work. In addition, it is a work that impressively captures important experiences in our modern history such as 4.19 and 5.16. The younger generation of White Road distinguishes themselves from the older generation by making the pursuit of art their own commonality. However, In-ok sensitively recognizes that she is not just a young man, but a “Youth-Woman.” Accordingly, In-ok chooses to love instead of immersed in art. In-ok continues her choice by dating various people. White Road shows the process of “Youth-Women” seeking their identity and direction of life in the late 1950s and early 1960s through this image of In-ok. In-ok breaks up with Hyung-mo and Do-hyun, who were just objects of free love and were meaningless. And she chooses to break up with Myung-gyu, the ideal husband. And she dreams of a perfect relationship through a relationship with Young-hwan, who suddenly appeared. The relationship before Yeong-hwan was due to rational thinking, that is, ‘the behind emotions’. However, the romance with Young-hwan shows the process of volatilizing everything and simply slipping into a passion. However, this relationship fails due to the death of Young-hwan. A relationship where the reality is all gone and only emotions remain. The passionate love process with Yeong-hwan, who is getting tense with passion, is also a metaphor for the revolution and a sensitivity to the revolution. In-ok eventually stands alone on the white road at the end, just like the beginning of the novel. However, this white road, which has been walked again, is an expression of a willingness to walk her own path as a place where it has been difficult to break up with ‘eagerness’, progress, and cynical awareness of her position.
