윤대녕의 ｢은어｣ 속 ‘영원회귀’에 나타난 존재론적 열망과 불안

국문 초록

이 논문은 윤대녕의 초기작이자 그를 1990년대를 대표하는 작가로 자리매김하게 한 ｢은어｣ 속 ‘시원회귀’와 ‘영원회귀’의 특성과 유전(流轉)하는 세계에서 인간이 느끼는 불안과 존재 정당화의 욕망을 분석했다. 니체적 맥락에서 영원회귀는 인간 중심주의의 배척과 차이를 생성하는 반복을 그 특성으로 하는 반면, 작품 속 영원회귀는 ‘나’의 자기중심성과 세대론적 반복을 보여준다. 인물의 시원회귀는 결국 자기 존재의 확실성과 당위성을 확보하기 위한 도구였고, 그 ‘시원’은 실체가 아니라 소급적으로 상상된 그 무엇일 뿐이다. ‘나’와 하은은 시원회귀와 영원회귀에의 갈망을 공유하는 것처럼 보이지만, 하은이 실제로 원했던 것은 그와의 안정적인 관계였다. 반면 ‘나’는 하은이라는 타자를 통해 다른 사람과 구별되는 ‘돌올한 존재’, 다시 말해 존재론적 열망을 가진 특별한 존재라는 자기 인식을 확보하고자 한다. 이러한 ‘나’의 유폐적 자기인식은 역설적으로 ‘나’의 친밀감에 대한 두려움을 보여주며, 텍스트는 이 두려움의 실체를 ‘조부-아버지/삼촌-‘나’-아들’의 세대적 반복을 통해 드러낸다. 조부, 아버지, 삼촌, ‘나’는 모두 배우자/연인과 원만한 관계를 맺지 못하고, 내적 필연성을 상실하고 사회적 관념으로만 남은 가족의 울타리에서 가족 구성원은 상처받고 고통을 겪는다. ‘나’의 유폐적 존재 정당화 근저에 가족으로부터 받은 상처와 고통이 있었고, 그것은 아들에게서 반복된다. ‘나’와 ‘아들’의 고통을 병치시킴으로써 텍스트는 인간이 실존하기 위해 필요한 것은 타인을 도구로 삼는 유아론적 사고와 행동이 아니라, 타자의 고통에 대한 공감과 자기중심성에서 벗어나고자 하는 투쟁이라는 사실을 일깨워준다.

영문 초록

This paper explored Yoon Dae-nyeong’s early work “Sweetfish” by analyzing the characteristics of ‘the eternal return’ and ‘the return to the origin,’ anxiety felt by humans in the ever-changing world, and justification of existence. While, in the Nietzsche’s context, the eternal return is characterized by the rejection of anthropocentrism and repetition that creates difference, the eternal return in the work shows the self-centeredness of the protagonist and repetition through generations. In the end, the protagonist’s ‘return to the origin’ was a means of justifying his existence, and the origin was not real, but something retroactively imagined. The protagonist and Ha-eun seem to share a desire for ‘the return to the origin’, but what she actually wanted was a stable relationship with him. On the other hand, the protagonist seeks to secure self-awareness as a special being with ontological desire through the other, Ha-eun. This confined self-awareness of the protagonist paradoxically shows his fear of intimacy, and the text reveals the reality of this fear through generational repetition of ‘grandfather-father/uncle-the protagonist-son.’ His grandfather, father, uncle, and himself all fail to have a stable relationship with their spouse/lover, and in a constrainedly maintained family relationship, family members are hurt and suffer each other. The protagonist’s wounds and pain from the family underlie his confined justification of existence, and it is repeated in his son. By juxtaposing the pain of the protagonist and his son, the text reminds us that what humans need to exist is not solipsistic thinking and behavior that uses others as tools, but sympathy for the pain of others and the struggle to escape self-centeredness.
