국문 초록

이 논문은 국문학이라는 대학 제도 하에서 현대문학이 성립되고 구성되는 과정을 살펴보면서 모더니즘 문학의 전위성이 국문학이라는 학문적 제도 양식 속에서 안정화되어가는 양상을 논의했다. 50년대 전후 비평은 단절의 감각 속에서 새로운 전통을 구성해야만 하고, ‘현대’라는 시대와 현대 속에서 새롭게 구성되는 현대문학의 정체성을 확립해야만 하는 상황에 놓여졌다. 50년대 전후 비평 담론에서 ‘내면성’의 문제가 강조되는 것은 이 시기가 현대와 문학의 주체로서의 정체성 확립이 요청되는 시대였기 때문이다. 그리고 임종국, 고석규, 이어령 등에 의해 수행된 50년대의 1세대 이상연구는 우리 현대문학의 ‘내면의 깊이’를 채우기 위한 작업이었다고 할 수 있다. 1세대 이상연구는 문학 분석의 과학성과 보편성을 확보함으로써 아카데믹한 문학연구의 가능성을 보여주었다. 이 연구들은 이상 문학을 현대라는 새로운 시대의 문을 여는 원점에 두면서 이상문학의 탈근대성을 인지하면서도 이를 억압하는 방식으로 연구를 진행한다. 해방 이후의 문학이 보수적인 국면으로 진행될 수밖에 없었던 것은 냉전체제라는 시대적 상황에서 기인하는 것도 있겠지만, 문학의 제도화라는 과제를 수행했어야만 했던 50년대 문학장의 성격 자체가 탈근대적이고 전위적인 요소를 감당할 수 없는 상태였기 때문이다. 이러한 시대적 상황에서 송욱의 김기림 모더니즘 비판의 맥락을 살펴볼 수 있다. 김기림의 모더니즘이 경계를 파열하고 해체하는 세계주의적 지향성을 보인다면 송욱의 모더니즘은 국가와 민족의 정체성의 정립이라는 민족주의적 지향성으로 나타난다. 제도와 질서가 강조되는 시기의 모더니즘은 필연적으로 제도화, 순수화될 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 50년대 모더니즘 문학이 문학의 역동성과 다양성을 상실한 것은 그 자체의 역량부족이라기보다는 시대적 상황에 따른 필연적 결과일 수 있다. 그리고 ‘내면성과 역사의식의 부재’라는 관점에서 문학연구 담론에서 한동안 제대로 평가를 받지 못한 김기림의 모더니즘 역시 대학이 제도의 자율성을 확보하면서 포섭하지 못한 예술의 전위적 자율성을 상징하는 하나의 시대적 알레고리였다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the process that modern literature was founded under the university system of Korean literature, and discusses how the avant-gardism of modernist literature settled down in the academic system of Korean literature. Criticism around the 1950s had to play a critical role of building a new tradition in a sense of discontinuity. It had to establish a new identity of “contemporary” times and contemporary literature that had been reforming in such times. The concept of “interiority” was emphasized in the critique discourse around the 1950s because the period required identity establishing asa subject of literature and the contemporary world. The first generation research on Lee Sang by Im Jongguk, Ko Seokgyu and Lee O Young, was conducted to fill the “depth of interiority” in contemporary Korean literature. The first generation research managed to reserve science and universality in literature analysis, suggesting possibility of academical research on literature. Such research placed Lee Sang’s literature at the opening point of the new times and recognized post-modernity in his literature, but at the same time examines his work in a way of oppressing the post-modernity. The literature after the liberation from the Japanese colonial rule was inevitably conservative. It is not only because of the historic situation of the Cold War, but also because the literature society in the 1950s, which had to fulfill the mission of systemization of literature, could not afford to embrace post-modernity and avant-gardism. We can see the context of Song Uk’s criticism on Kim Kirim’s modernism in this historic context. Song Uk’s modernism is based on a nationalistic orientation to build national identity while Kim Kirim is based on a cosmopolitan orientation that breaks and deconstructs borders. It is because modernism necessarily becomes systemized and purified in the times that emphasizes system and order. Literature in the1950s lost its dynamics and diversity possibly because of the limits of the period rather than lack of its own capacity. Kim Kirim’s modernism was not well appreciated for a time being, as stated “lack of interiority and historical awareness,” in the literature research discourse. This is an allegory of the times when university education received autonomy but could not include autonomy of avant-garde in art.
