국문 초록

이 글에서는 한국근대문학을 대표하는 모더니스트 작가인 이태준의 월북 동기를 해방기의 작가들이 처했던 냉전 질서와 연동시켜 고찰해보고자 했다. 이태준의 가장 가까운 동료이자 친구였던 정지용은 왜 서울에 머물렀는지 그리고 두 사람의 행보는 해방 이후 어떻게 달라졌는지 등의 문제들을 그들이 남긴 자기 서사를 중심으로 분석했다. 특히, 이분법적인 정치 상황 속에서 살아남기 위해 정지용이 발표할 수밖에 없었던 공개서한을 전향서로 독해하면서 이태준의 소련 기행과 월북의 연관성을 추론하고자 했다. 이태준이 소련 방문 기간 동안 고리키 문학을 동경하게 된 사건에 초점을 두고 『쏘련기행』을 재독(再讀)하는 한편 해방 전과 해방 후의 이태준 문학의 사상적 일관성 및 연속성을 강조했다. 이태준의 월북 동기는 크게 두 가지 측면으로 나누어서 분석해볼 수 있다. 우선, 문화재 애호가였던 이태준은 화폐로 모든 것이 교환 가능한 자본주의에 거부감을 가지고 있었다. 노동자가 예술가로 살 수 있고 더 나아가 예술가가 노동자로 살 수 있는 소련의 문화정책에 동의하며 이태준은 사회주의에 점차 우호적인 입장을 가지게 되었다. 또한, 이태준은 소련 기행에서 고리키 문학의 사회적인 영향력에 큰 감동을 받았다. 이 글에서는 이태준이 사회주의 리얼리즘 혹은 심미적 사회주의를 귀국 후 글쓰기로 실천하고자 하는 포부를 가졌음에 주목했다. 마지막으로 개인 우상화에 저항하다 숙청당하고 마는 이태준의 최후 또한 그가 해방 이전부터 견지했던 문학론의 적극적인 실천으로 해석했다.

영문 초록

In this article, I will consider why Lee Tae-jun, a modernist writer who represents modern Korean literature, chose to go to North Korea. After liberation, writers of the two Koreas had to face the Cold War order and post-colonial reality, judging that Lee Tae-jun’s decision to North Korea was also related to the Cold War, and wanted to analyze Lee Tae-jun’s literary work in conjunction with the situation of the two Koreas after liberation. The following questions will be asked to find out why Lee Tae-jun left Seoul. Also, why did Jeong Ji-yong, Lee Tae-jun’s closest literary colleague and friend stay in Seoul? I have tried to analyze the reality that the two writers had to face after liberation centered on their self-narratives. Lee Tae-jun’s motive for North Korea can be analyzed in two main ways. First of all, Lee Tae-jun, a cultural heritage lover, could be interpreted as attractive to socialism, where labor can be embodied as art, rather than capitalism, where everything can be exchanged in currency. Second, Lee Tae-jun was deeply moved by Maxim Gorky of literature in the Soviet Union’s travels and added meaning to his desire to practice socialist realism or aesthetic socialism in writing after returning Korea. In particular, this article was intended to reexamine The Trip of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics focusing on the events that Lee Tae-jun discovered Maxim Gorky during his visit to the Soviet Union, and to demonstrate the ideological consistency and continuity of Lee Tae-jun’s literature before and after liberation.
