계용묵 소설에 나타난 장애인 형상화 연구

국문 초록

계용묵은 장애에 대한 부정적인 인식과 배제의 시선이 지배적인 1930년대라는 상황에서 장애인을 주인공으로 삼은 소설을 다수 발표한 독특한 작가이다. 소설 속 장애인들은 주변 인물이 아닌 중심인물 역할을 맡고 있으며, 그들의 장애는 선천적이기도 하지만 대개 후천적으로 발생한, 즉 상황과 시대에 의한 장애라는 특징을 보인다. 이는 단순히 특별한 인물이라는 설정을 넘어 장애에 대한 작가의 자의식에 대한 반증일 뿐 아니라, 일제강점기라는 시대적 인식과 무관하지 않다. 장애 인물을 그리는 방식에 있어 계용묵은 신체적 특징 및 장애 형상에 관한 외향 묘사보다는 서사의 흐름을 통해 장애를 인물의 다양한 내적, 심리적 특성과 연관 짓고 이를 주제와 긴밀하게 연결시킨다. 계용묵은 장애인을 형상하는 방식에 있어서 장애를 가진 인물을 공동체의 존속을 가능케 하는 타자로 치환하는 것을 거부함으로써 사회를 구성하는 인간 군상 중 하나의 존재로 형상화한다는 해석의 여지를 남긴다. 계용묵은 장애를 가진 인물의 징후나 증상, 불안 등이 심해지는 과정이 공동체의 문제를 드러내고 사회의 정체성을 의심하게 하는 극적 전개를 택함으로써 동일성의 원리를 기반으로 장애를 배제의 근거로 보았던 당대의 시선을 넘어서고 있다는 점에서 주목을 요하는 작가이다. 유례없는 질병의 ‘세계적 대유행’(팬데믹, pandemic)이 아니더라도 현대인들은 사회적, 물리적 구조로 인해 예측할 수 없는 사고와 질병에 노출되어 있으며 완전한 몸과 온전한 정신이라는 단어는 그 자체로 불완전한 것으로 인식되고 있다. 이처럼 후천적 장애와 불안이라는 키워드에 익숙해진 시대에 계용묵의 소설 속 장애 연구는 작가 재조명의 적절한 시의성과 함께 우리 문학 연구의 깊이를 더하는 작업이 될 수 있으리라 기대해 본다.

영문 초록

Gye Yongmook is a unique writer who published multiple novels, in which disabled persons were the main characters, in the 1930s, when negative perceptions of and exclusionary eyes on disabilities were dominant. The disabled persons in the novels play the role of central characters rather than surrounding people, and their disabilities are sometimes congenital but are acquired mostly, that is, they show the characteristic that the disabilities were caused by circumstances and times. This goes beyond the setting that they are of special figures and is not only the proof of the writer’s self-consciousness about disability, but also not unrelated to the awareness of the times as the Japanese colonial era. As for the way he depicts disabled persons, Gye Yongmook relates disabled persons with the figures’ diverse internal and psychological characteristics through the flow of narrations rather than extrovert descriptions of physical characteristics and the shapes of disabilities, and closely connects them with the theme. Gye Yongmook is a writer that requires attention in that he went beyond the eyes of the time that viewed disabilities as a basis for exclusion based on the principle of identity by adopting the dramatic development in which the process for the signs, symptoms, and anxiety of persons with disabilities to be intensified reveals the problems of the community and makes the identity of society to be doubted.
