한중일의 ‘제임스 조이스’ 담론과 매체 네트워크

국문 초록

20세기 현대문학 또는 모더니즘 문학을 대표하는 작가인 제임스 조이스와 그의 작품 『율리시스』는 등장과 동시에 구미 문학계에서 화제를 불러일으켰고 곧이어 동아시아의 문학장 안에도 빠르게 소개 흡수되었다. 『율리시스』는 아일랜드를 무대로 쓰였지만 뉴욕에서 연재되고 파리에서 단행본이 출간되었으며 미국에서 외설 논쟁으로 금서가 되는 등 국경을 초월한 텍스트로서 모더니즘 문학의 탈식민성과 난해성을 상징한다. 특히 일본에서 1930년대 초 등장한 두 종의 번역본과 조이스에 대한 활발한 소개는 한중일 문학장에서 다양한 논의들과 담론을 파생시켰는데, 그 대표적인 것이 신심리주의 및 리얼리즘 논쟁과 근대문학과 소설의 새로운 전망에 대한 논의였다. 이 글은 한중일에서 조이스와 그의 작품에 대한 이해와 비평의 시도들이 갖는 담론의 패턴을 추적해 보고 서로 얽혀 있는 텍스트들의 상호관계를 재구축하기 위해 쓰인 것이다. 1930년대 문학장에서 조이스에 대한 관심은 프로문학 진영과 비프로문학 진영 할 것 없이 모두에서 폭발적이었고, 자신의 문학적 입장을 강화하기 위해 비판 또는 옹호되었다. 이 때 각자의 논거를 강화하기 위해 참조하고 전유한 텍스트들은 동시대 영미문학계의 흐름을 반영하고 있었으며, 특히 이 때 눈에 띄었던 것이 미국의 좌익 문예잡지들이었다. 이 글에서는 특히 ‘뉴 매시스’를 비롯한 1930년대 미국 좌익 모더니즘 잡지들이 동아시아와 접속하는 장면들을 발견하고, 한국에서도 이에 대한 다양한 참조와 전유의 양상이 있음을 밝혔다. 이를 통해 동아시아의 모더니즘 나아가 글로벌한 모더니즘의 현상들과 텍스트들이 근대 매체들의 문화사적 연결망 속에서 동시대성을 가지며 진영을 초월하여 훨씬 광범위하게 서로 얽혀 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

James Joyce, an author who represents modern literature in the 20th century, and his work Ulysses, a cross-border text, created a sensation in the western literary world and soon after, quickly introduced and absorbed into the literary arena of East Asia. In particular, the active introduction of the two species of translation, which appeared in Japan in the early 1930s, derived various discussions and discourse in the literature field of Korea, China, and Japan, representing the neo-psychological debate and the future of modern literature. This study aims to track the patterns of discourse in understanding Joyce and to track the interrelationship of the interwoven texts. Interest in Joyce in the 1930s literary arena exploded beyond literary positions and Joyce’s works and style were criticized or defended to strengthen their literary positions. At this time, the texts referenced and unique to strengthen their arguments reflected the trend of contemporary English American literature, especially the American left-wing literary magazines that stood out at this time. This study found scenes of American left-wing modernist magazines connecting to East Asia in the 1930s, especially the New Masses, and revealed that there are various references and exclusions in Korea. This confirmed that East Asian modernism and global modernism texts are contemporaneous in the cultural and historical networks of modern media and are much more broadly intertwined beyond the literary positions.
