지체장애학교 중도·중복장애 졸업생의 학교교육에 대한 경험과 졸업 후 삶에 대한 질적 연구

국문 초록

우리나라 특수교육의 양적, 질적 발전에도 불구하고 특수교육을 받은 장애인들의 고용, 자립생활, 지역사회참여 등 성인생활에서의 성과는 높지 못하며, 특히 중도·중복장애졸업생의 경우 과반수가 가정으로 돌아가 생활하고 있는 것으로 조사되었다. 이 연구의 목적은 지체장애학교 중도·중복장애졸업생들의 학교교육에 대한 경험과 졸업 후 생활에 대한 면접을 실시하고 그 결과를 해석함으로써 중도·중복장애학생을 위한 지체장애학교의 교육방향과 중도·중복장애인의 성인생활로의 지원체계를 모색하는 것이었다. 연구 참여자는 2001-2005년에 G 광역시 소재 지체장애학교를 졸업한 중도·중복장애학생 15명과 그들의 부모였다. 반구조화 면접 방법을 사용하여 참여자별로 학교교육 경험과 졸업 후 생활에 대하여 개별 면접을 실시하였다. 연구 참여자들은 지체장애학교 학교교육 경험에 대해 개인의 장애 정도에 따라 만족도의 차이를 보이고 있으며 장애특성과 요구에 따른 개별화 교육과 전환교육을 통해 실생활에 도움이 되는 교육을 필요로 하였다. 또한 중도·중복장애인의 경우 학교 졸업 후 고용의 기회가 전혀 주어지지 않고 있을 뿐 만 아니라 신체장애가 심하다는 이유로 본인이 희망하는 시설이나 기관을 이용하지 못하고 있어 심한 좌절감을 느끼고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 직업훈련기관에서 교육을 받고 난 후에도 취업이 되지 않아 다시 가정으로 돌아가거나 직업교육기관에 재입학하는 과정을 되풀이하고 있었으며 별다른 여가생활을 하지 못한 채 무료하게 지내고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 연구 참여자들은 무엇보다 이동의 어려움을 호소하였으며, 장애성인 지원 정책이 단지 가정의 경제 수준만을 고려한 국민기초생활보장 수급대상자에게 집중되어 있음을 지적하였다. 연구 참여자들의 졸업 후 생활에 대한 어려움은 미래에 대한 불안감으로 나타났으며, 이들은 학교 졸업 후에도 장애정도와 특성에 맞는 체계적인 지원이 지속적으로 제공되기를 간절히 원하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of school education and life after high school graduation of physically challenged school graduates with severe and multiple disabilities. A qualitative research method was used for conducting this study. Fifteen physically challenged school graduates with severe and multiple disabilities and their parents participated in this study. Based on a 2-item questionnaire (for school education that they received) and a 5-item questionnaire (for life after school graduation of students with severe and multiple disabilities), the researcher (the primary author) conducted semi-structured interviews individually with each participant. All the interviews were recorded and transcribed by the researcher, using Colaizzi s method. Based on the students interviews, essential themes of experience emerged: needs of transition education based on the individualized education plan, no opportunities for employment and low wages, needs of assistive technology service, difficulties for using the facilities and center for the disabled, no opportunities for employment after the vocational education and training, meaningless leisure time, difficulty of using a means of transportation and no ways for the motorized wheelchair, limited support system only for welfare recipients, needs of the steady supports for medical services and rehabilitation, fear of the future, etc. The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of school education and life after high school graduation of physically challenged school graduates with severe and multiple disabilities.
