한·중 문헌에 나타난 女國에 대한 서술과 인식

국문 초록

이 연구에서는 한·중 문헌 속에 소개된 女國에 주목하여, 그것이 서술되는 방식과 인식을 탐구하였다. 논의의 시작은 다음의 두 질문에서 비롯되었다. “한·중 기록에서 여국이 어떻게 기술되고 있는가?” “이국에 대한 정보와 견문의 기록 주체였던 한·중 양국의 남성 지식인들은 여국을 어떻게 인식하고 있는가?” 이 논문에서는 두 질문에 대한 답을 찾기 위해 중국과 한국의 문헌 속에 나타난 여국의 서술 양상을 검토하였다. 『산해경』을 비롯한 고대 중국 문헌에서는 여국이 여성들만으로 구성되어 있는, 물과 인접해 있는 공간으로 기술된다. 그리고 이곳에서 여국인들이 우물을 보거나 바람과 교감하며 처녀 생식을 하는 것으로 설명된다. 여성과 물, 생식을 연계시키는 방식은 신화적 사유에 근간을 두고 있다. 그러나 후대로 가면서 여국은 남성의 생존이 불가능한 폐쇄적이고 배타적인 공간으로 인식의 전환이 이뤄진다. 신라, 조선으로 이어지는 여국에 대한 서술은 기본적으로 중국의 문헌 기록과 지도, 표류나 사행 과정에서의 견문과 풍문을 바탕으로 이루어졌다. 여국을 직접적인 체험을 기반으로 인식한 것이 아니라, 타국의 문헌이나 자료, 견문 등을 기반으로 간접적으로 인식한 것이다. 이에 따라 여국에 대한 서술은 외부로부터 수용된 정보를 검토하고 해석하는 과정을 수반했다. 그 과정에서 여국은 실제 역사 지리 속에 존재하는 공간으로 언급되기도 하고, 중국의 서사에 기록된 허구의 판타지 세계로 이해되기도 했으며, 여국의 실재에 대해 합리적인 차원에서 해석하거나 고증하려는 시도가 이뤄지기도 했다.

영문 초록

In this study, focusing on the women s country introduced in literatures of Korea and China, the way it is described and the perception of the women s country were researched. This discussion was started with two questions.: “How have been recorded the women s country in the Korean-Chinese narratives?”, “How did male intellectuals from both Korea and China, who were the subjects of recording information and knowledge about foreign countries, perceive women s country?” In order to find an answer to the question, this paper examines the descriptive aspect of the women s country in literatures and records of China and Korea. Records from a relatively early period of Chinese literature narratives described the women s country as a space adjacent to the water consisting of only women. Here, women reproduce asexually, by looking at the well or interacting with the wind. The method of linking women with water and reproduction is based on mythical thinking. However, in addition to the characteristics of women s country, descriptions of cannibalism and man-killing customs are added, and women s country is recognized as a closed and exclusive space where men cannot survive. In Korea, the description of the women s country is seen the records from Silla to late Joseon Dynasty. The description of the women s country was basically based on Chinese literature materials and maps, and knowledge and rumors from outside. Before late Joseon Dynasty, the woman’s country was regarded as a real geographic space, and in general, attention was paid to the authenticity of the woman’s country. However, in late Joseon dynasty, it shows a pattern that is regarded as an object of historical testimony and exploration, fear and sexual fantasy of a woman s country of reproduction.
