峿堂 李象秀의 『論語』 해석과 朱子學

국문 초록

경화사족의 핵심인 老論系는 중앙정계에서의 위상을 공고화하려는 욕망으로 인하여 그 근간인 주자학의 학술적 정당성을 확보하는 방향으로 연구를 심화시킨다. 이상수는 老論系 학자로 湖論 韓元震의 학통을 계승한 인물이다. 朱子는 『四書』에 경서의 지위를 부여하고 이를 주석한 『四書集註』를 편찬하여 주자학 이론의 근거로삼는다. 그러나 『論語集註』의 경우 주자가 초년에 그 초고를 완성한 이래로 장기간수정의 과정을 거친다. 그 사이에 일부 견해의 변화가 생겨서 초년의 설과 충돌하기에 이른 것이다. 이는 반주자학파의 비판 대상이 된다. 문제는 이것이 주자 설의의미를 왜곡시켜 주자학의 대의를 오인하게 한다는 것이다. 이것이 이상수가 ｢論語筆程｣을 집필한 동기가 된 것으로 보인다.그는 『論語集註』 보완과 해명을 위해 다양한 해석 방식을 활용한다. 문리에 대한체계적 분석, 이설에 대한 실증적 비판이 그것이다. 문리에 대한 체계적 분석의 사례는 『論語』 전편의 구성과 문장 간의 관계를 분석하고 이를 단서로 주요 개념의함의를 파악하는 것이다. 그 결과 『集註』의 주자설을 활용하여 『論語』 전편의 구성을 체계적으로 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 『論語』와 『集註』의 주요 개념을 체계적으로 이해할 수 있었다. 또한 이설에 대한 실증적 비판의 사례는 반주자학설의 핵심논거인 古注의 설을 실증적 논거로 비판하고 이를 단서로 주자주를 변호하는 것이다. 그 결과 이로써 반주자학설에 대응할 실증적 논거를 주자학자에게 제공할 수있었다.특히 ‘주자의 정론이 다 최초의 견해로 귀결된 까닭에 『集註』가 해석의 기준이 되어야 한다’고 역설한 韓元震의 학설을 추종하여 『集註』를 기준으로 삼고 실증적 논거를 가지고 그 결점을 보완한 점, 편장의 구성 뿐 아니라 자구의 호응에 주목하여그 함의를 세밀히 분석한 점 등의 특징이 다 그 제자인 朴文鎬의 경설과 어느 정도일치한다는 점에서 그 영향 관계를 짐작할 수 있었다. 그러므로 이상수의 『論語』해석 사례는 老論 湖論系 경학의 계승 양상과 그 실체를 보여주는 한 사례라고 평가할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

The circle of Patriarch’s Faction in late Joseon Dynasty became keenly aware of the need for a stronger Neo-Confucian system and promoted the intensification of the doctrine by using various methods. In other words, they decided to supplement the incomplete Neo-Confucian theory to protect it against criticism and confirm it as the established theory of Chutzu to strengthen its point. Sang-soo Lee (1820-1882) is a scholar of the Patriarch’s Faction and succeeded to the scholastic mantle of Won-jin Han who represents Ho Faction. Chutzu gave the 『Four Books (四書)』 the status of a Confucian classic and compiled the 『Commentaries on the Four Books (四書集註)』, making it the basis of the Neo-Confucian theory. Meanwhile, the 『 Commentaries on the Analects (論語集註)』 often becomes the subject of criticism for having incomplete parts for it was compiled earlier. The problem is that it distorts the great cause of the Neo-Confucianism. This motivated Sang-soo Lee to write the ｢View on the Analects (論語筆程)｣. Lee used various methods to supplement the 『Commentaries on the Analects (論語集註)』, such as the analysis of the classic, criticism on old annotations, and expatiation on the commentaries. The analysis of the classic is about analyzing the response relationship between the essentials and doctrines of the entire 『Analects (論語)』 and each component of the verses and their composition. The criticism on old annotations is about criticizing the theory of old annotations which form the basis of argument of anti-orthodox-Neo-Confucianism. The expatiation on the commentaries attempted a detailed analysis of the Chutzu’s annotations. These are the appropriate examples for examining Lee’s view on Confucian classics and its characteristics, and how the Confucianism developed within Ho Faction of Patriarch’s Faction for they show different interpretational methods and types.
