국문 초록

「비애」의 첫 번째 아이러니는 인간과 말의 대화라는 사실에서 발생하는데, 이것은 인간들 사이의 소통 부재라는 점에 비추어 사회 문제를 제기하는 것이 되기도 한다. 또한 말과 인간의 교감은 사람과 동물의 특별한 상황적 일치를 드러내는 장치로서 마부와 말의 일체감을 표현하는 것이 된다. 동정과 위로를 받아야 할 자가 오히려 많은 희생을 감수한다는 사실에서 두 번째 아이러니가 발생하며, 세 번째 아이러니는 마부의 진정한 슬픔 문제를 제기한다. 그는 자신의 비애를 말하고 싶어 하는데, 그것은 ‘아들을 잃은 슬픔’이 아니라 아들을 잃은 ‘아버지의 슬픔’을 위로받고 싶은 것으로 판명된다. 마부의 슬픔은 자기 연민이라는 세 번째 아이러니를 발생시키는 것이다. 이러한 사실은 「비애」에서 풍자적 측면을 후퇴시키고 아이러니의 양상을 강화시킨다.

영문 초록

Chekhov’s work from 1886 witnesses his skillful use of the greater importance of psychological characterization. One theme prominent is that of irony resulting from a character’s incompatibility with others or with his environment as a whole, i.e., his isolation from his fellow man. The dull pain of the cabdriver Iona Potapov in “Toska” (Misery) is an example of the case. The exposition of the story that the horse is almost human prepares us for the closing episode, the cabdriver’s dialogue with his horse or the mutual emotional exchange, which becomes the first irony of the anecdotal work. The second irony arises from the fact that the man who needs comfort and sympathy sacrifices in some ways. It is highlighted in the process of running with the second fares. The third irony raises the question of Iona’s true sorrow. He wants to tell his grief, but it is turned out that he wanted to be comforted not because of the sorrow of losing a son but because of the grief of father who lost a son. The third irony tells that his self-pity is the true nature of his sorrow. This fact reduces the satirical nature to strengthen the aspects of irony. It is because the characterization of Iona who tries to talk to the animal proves that he maintains composure in his inner state, even though it is tragic.
