국문 초록

본 연구는 다문화 혼례의 과정 속에서 과연 문화정체성의 소통이 어떤 방식으로 이루어지고 있으며, 새로운 다문화 정체성이 한국 사회에서 형성되고 있는가를 분석하고 있다. 한국인과 결혼을 하는 많은 외국인들 중 특히 동슬라브인들, 즉 우크라이나, 러시아, 벨라루시인들에 주목하여, 이들과 한국인들 사이 혼례의 과정에서 발생하는 문제점들의 해결 방법, 자신들의 정체성을 표현하는 방법 등을 살펴보고 있다. 이러한 과정 속에서 한국인과 슬라브인들 사이 소통 방식과 다문화 정체성의 생성 방식을 파악하고 있다. 이 연구를 통해 과연 한국은 다문화 사회로 나가고 있는가? 한국의 다문화 사회는 과연 어떠한 특징을 갖는가? 다문화 사회로의 지향을 위해 시급한 점은 무엇인가? 라는 문제에 대한 해답을 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The problems posed by the participation of two different families or communities in inter-ethnic weddings must have an unlimited number of solutions. Leeds-Hurwitz (2002) identified four types of weddings in order to show the potential solutions to the problem of designing an intercultural wedding. I discussed in this paper how Slavic people, who married to Korean people, are able to express themselves through the following four types of weddings: 1) Weddings that predominantly reflect one culture Having a wedding that predominantly follows either the bride s or groom s traditions is one way for a couple to express ethnic identification. In Korea, this variant often occurs when one member of the couple considers it quite important to have a wedding conforming to religious or cultural tradition, whereas the other does not particularly care, feels obligated to forego tradition, or willingly gives up tradition for the sake of harmony. 2) Double wedding Some of my informants hold two entire weddings in two countries to satisfy the families of both sides. In this case, each wedding ceremony follows the traditions of the country in which it occurs. This practice can make everyone on both sides happy because the wedding they see conforms to their expectations. 3) Weddings that express no ethnic identity Two of my informants tried not to express their ethnic identity through their wedding, choosing either a neutral ceremony, which was often a Korean mainstream wedding, or a different kind of wedding. Couples choose this type of wedding for various reasons: Firstly, if the bride and groom have a serious conflict with their families or religious institutions concerning their decision to marry or their wedding s ritual form, they may choose to have a neutral wedding that does not express any ethnic tradition or require institutional permission. Secondly, if the bride and groom are not from culturally strong families and/or have little knowledge of their own traditions, they often choose to have a mainstream wedding. Thirdly, if the bride and groom s ethnicity might negatively affect their reputation and prestige, they will not express their ethnic identity through their wedding. 4) Weddings that combine two families or two ethnic cultures Inter-cultural couples face the same issue of how to bring their divergent family or ethnic backgrounds together in their wedding. My goal here is to discuss these couples creativity in combining symbols of both families and/or both ethnic cultures in a wedding. Those couples that have this type of wedding pay special attention to balancing the ethnic symbols and elements of both sides. As well, these couples display these symbols and elements by giving them equal emphasis. Unfortunately, in this study, I could not to find any example of the fourth type of weddings, which reflect the nature of the multicultural society. In Korea, the first type of wedding rituals are more dominant. It means that majority in Korean society does not particularly care about ethnic minorities culture and tradition while minorities feel obligated to gives up tradition for the sake of harmony.
