체홉의 작품에 나타난 아동의 문제

국문 초록

이 연구는 러시아 작가 안똔 체홉이 창작한 아동용 텍스트들에서 다양하게 나타나는 시-공에 대한 아동들의 지각과 반응, 어른들과의 소통 부재에서 느끼는 무력감 등을 고찰하는 데에 목적이 있다. 나아가 작가가 아동을 통해 어떤 예술효과를 거두는지도 살펴보겠다. 본 연구를 위해 체홉의 중-단편소설과 자전적인 이야기들을 본문에서 다루었다. 체홉의 아동을 위한 텍스트에서는 어른들이 생각하기에 독특한 성격을 가진 아동뿐만 아니라 아동들이 어른들을 어떻게 생각하고 있는지 독자로 하여금 스스로 통찰하게 만든다. 그리고 어른들은 아동들이 자기 눈을 통해 이제야 알게 된 이 세상의 모습이 어떻게 보이는지 관심있게 지켜볼 필요가 있다. 왜냐하면, 아동들은 자신의 제한된 세계에서 막 벗어나 또 다른 세계를 인식하게 되며 그곳으로부터 온통 흥미롭고 새로운 것들을 자각하기 시작하기 때문이다. 따라서 체홉은 부모들이 자기 아이들에게 지금 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 이해하는 일이 매우 중요하므로, 아동들에게 더욱 주의를 기울여 줄 것을 호소하고 있다. 체홉의 단편들에서 아동들은 정직하려고 애를 쓰는 존재들이다. 아동들은 모욕당한 사람들을 보호하기 위해 스스로 나서거나 어른들이 저지르는 어리석은 행위들에 대해서 분노하기도 한다. 아동들은 기쁨을 받은 일에 대해 감사해하거나 고마워 할 줄 알며, 누가 힘들어서 타인의 도움을 필요로 하는지를 스스로 판단할 수 있는 능력을 보여준다. 또한 각막한 현실에서 정신적인 상처를 입은 채 현실에 적응해야 하는 아동은 특히 환상과 현실 사이를 잘 구별하지 못할 수 있다. 하지만, 이런 상황에서도 작가는 사건에 개입하지 않고 단지 상황 자체를 독자에게 보여줄 뿐이지만, 그러나 어느 누구도 다른 사람을 학대하고 모욕하며 멸시해서는 안된다는 작가의 생각을 전달하기도 한다. 나아가 체홉은 어린 시절을 빼앗긴 고통 받는 아동들을 작품에서 묘사함으로써 전반적인 러시아의 사회적 인식을 발전시키는데 큰 영향을 주었다. 비판적 리얼리즘의 전통을 이어받은 작가 체홉이 아동을 다룬 이야기는 사회의 불평등을 통렬하게 지적하며 아동들에 대한 어른들의 사회적 책임 문제도 함께 제기했다. 결국 아동의 문제는 아동의 현실과 꿈, 현실과 환상의 뒤바꿈을 통해 작가 체홉이 의도하는 분위기를 만들어내고 독자에게 바람직한 아동문제를 제시하는 데 기여했다고 할 수 있다. 말하자면, 아동들에 대한 관심을 유도하면서 독자들의 심리에 영향을 미치는 한편 작가의 평범한 작품들에 힘을 실어주고 긴장감과 리듬을 부여해주었던 것이다.

영문 초록

This study contemplates on perceptions and reactions of children’s that are expressed in various ways in stories for children written by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. The main purpose of the study is to examine what artistic effects the writer achieves through children’s problems. In addition we will learn about sense of helplessness that children feel in absence of communication with adults and how children perceive time and space. For that purpose we will examine short and medium-length stories as well as the writer’s letters In texts for children Chekhov doesn’t only portray the peculiar characteristics that are implied to children by adults, but also makes the reader to penetrate into what children think of adults. And adults need to observe with interest how children see the newly discovered world around them through their own eyes, as children get out of their own limited worlds and become aware of and begin to perceive absolutely exciting and new things of other worlds. Thus, the writer emphasizes that it is very important for parents to understand what is going on with their children and they should always pay more attention to them. In Chekhov’s works children are creatures who try to be honest. They stand up for the insulted and even get furious at adults’ foolish behavior. They know how to be grateful for joy and have ability to decide by their own who is week and is in need for help. Moreover, children who were emotionally scarred and have to adapt to the reality can often find it hard to distinguish between fantasy and reality, and in this cases the writer doesn’t intervene and only describes the situation as it is, however delivering his opinion that no one has rights to abuse, insult and scorn another person. In addition to that, Chekhov greatly influenced social awareness by describing in his works children who were deprived of childhood. His stories, that inherited traditions of critical realism, sharply pointed out social inequality and brought up a problem of adults’ responsibility over children. Finally, one can say the atmosphere where child’s reality and dreams, memories and fantasy are intentionally mixed up helped Chekhov to raise problems of the children. In other words, it influences the reader’s state of mind and empowers a seemingly ordinary work of the writer by adding the tension.
