한국어 중의어 처리 과정에서 음운 경로의 역할

국문 초록

한국어 단어 재인 과정에서 주요 논쟁점 중 하나인 음운 경로의 역할에 대해 중의어의 한 종류인 동철이음어(heteronym)를 통해 확인해 보았다. 표기 정보는 동일하지만 음운 정보에 따라 의미가 달라지는 동철이음어의 특성은 음운 경로의 접근 시기 및 상대적 중요성을 밝히는데 매우 유용하다고 판단된다. 청각 점화 자극-시각 목표 자극 제시 방식의 교차 감각 점화 과제를 사용하여 음운 정보에 대한 직접적 접근을 유도하고, 이를 통하여 표기 및 음운 정보의 사용 여부를 확인하였다. 실험 1에서는 동철이음어의 두 번째 음절을 기준으로 음운을 변화시켜 점화 자극을 구성하고, 표적 자극으로 제시한 동철이음어의 어휘 판단 시간을 측정하였다. 그 결과 표기와 음운 경로의 충돌 가능성이 있는 경우 반응 시간이 증가하였으며, 이는 음운 경로가 주요하게 사용될 가능성을 제시하였다. 실험 2에서는 반복 점화 과제를 사용하여 동철이음어의 두 가지 발음을 각각 점화 자극으로 제시하고 시각적으로 제시된 동일한 동철이음어에 대한 어휘 판단 시간을 측정하였다. 그 결과 상대적인 사용 빈도가 높은 음운 정보에 부합하는 점화 자극이 제시된 경우의 반응 시간이 빨랐다. 두 실험의 결과를 종합해 보면, 동철이음어 처리 과정에서 음운 경로가 주요하게 사용되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The present study discusses the role of phonological route in the word recognition process, using Korean heteronym. Given that heteronym has two different pronunciations with the same spelling, it can be useful to find out when accessing phonological information and how important it is, compared to the orthographic. Thus, a cross-modal priming task was performed because participants could directly access to phonological information. In experiment 1, a 2-syllable prime stimulus was constructed whose pronunciation of the second syllable matches that of Korean heteronym. The prime stimulus was presented auditorily and a lexical decision task for a visual target was conducted. The results showed that longer reaction time appeared in the case of orthograph-phonology conflict. In experiment 2, a cross-modal repetition priming task was performed. A heteronym was presented auditorily as a prime (both of the two different pronunciations were used) and a lexical decision task was conducted for the same heteronym. The results showed that faster reaction time appeared when its pronunciation corresponds to its phonology of the relatively higher frequency. These results suggest the possibility that phonological route may be used as a primary route in the word recognition.
