스모그와 주식수익률 : 중국시장에 대한 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 중국 주식시장(상해거래소 및 심천거래소)을 분석대상으로 하고 Levy, Yagil(2013), Hirsheleifer, Shamuway(2003)처럼 단순회귀분석을 통해 스모그가 주식수익률에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 또한, 심한 스모그가 주식수익률에 미치는 영향도 추가적으로 분석하였다. 본 연구에서는 스모그의 정도를 판단하기 위하여 일평균 AQI를 사용하였다. 주요 실증분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전체 표본기간에서 AQI는 상하이종합지수와 선전종합지수 수익률에 통계적으로 비유의적인 영향을 미친다. 이는 중국에서 스모그 발생빈도가 높기 때문에 주식수익률에 유의적인 영향을 미치지 않는다는 것을 의미한다. 둘째, 심한 스모그는 주식수익률에 통계적으로 유의적인 음(-)의 영향을 미친다. 본 연구의 결과에 의하면 스모그가 나타나는 확률이 높아지면 건강 문제뿐만 아니라 부정적인 경제 문제도 초래할 가능성이 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 나라의 환경보호에 대한 정책과 법도가 더 강화되어야 한다. 투자자들은 주식수익률에 영향을 미치는 내부요인뿐만 아니라 날씨와 같은 외부요인까지 더 전면적으로 고려해야 한다.

영문 초록

Many studies in finance have shown that the relationship between weather and stock returns. Weather has an effect on stock market returns through investors psychological status which influences their judgement and decision making. Smog affects not only human physical health but also mental health which results in the heightened levels of negative psychological status (mainly refers to depression, a sense of helplessness, anxiety, tension, anger). In China, smog is classified as damaging weather. This paper investigate the relationship between smog data from air quality index, and stock returns of two exchanges of China using regression. After controlling other variables, the results of this study indicate that people get used to smog if they have lived in an area where smog often occurs for a long time, so smog will have no meaningful effect on people s investment sentiments and stock returns in such circumstances. On the other hand, the results of this study also reveals that when severe smog hits in China, it has a strongly negative impact on Chinese stock market. In conclusion, smog is not only an environmental problem but it may also have harmful effects on financial market in certain circumstances such as with people who are not used to smog or when severe smog occurs.
