리듬의 복잡성과 속도가 양손 협응 구조에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

양손 협응으로 이루어지는 리듬 과제를 수행할 때 일반적으로 양손이 하나의 흐름(stream)에 기반해 통합적으로 움직인다는 결과가 제시되어 왔다. 하지만 일부 연구에서는 매우 복잡한 리듬 과제를 수행할 때 혹은 아주 빠른 속도의 리듬 과제를 수행할 때 각 손의 움직임이 독립적으로 나타나는 현상을 보고하였으나 이에 대한 명확한 설명이 제시되지 않았다. 본 연구는 이를 확인하기 위해 리듬의 속도와 복잡성을 실험적으로 조작하여 리듬-기반 양손 협응 과제에 주는 영향을 살펴보았다. 양손 움직임의 일관성 있는 협응 구조를 보이는 전문가 수준의 피아노 연주자를 대상으로 2가지 속도(40 & 60 cpm)와 2가지 리듬(4:3 & 5:4)의 리듬-기반 과제를 부여하고 과제 수행 시 나타나는 양손 협응의 구조를 확인하였다. 그 결과 리듬의 속도가 증가함에 따라 각 손의 독립적인 움직임이 증가하였으나 복잡성에 따른 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 한편 구현된 리듬의 안정성은 수행 속도와 복잡성이 증가함에 따라 감소하였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 복잡성과 속도를 모두 고려할 수 있는 사건 발생 비율(event rate)의 측면에서 양손 협응 구조와의 관련성을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

A plethora of research on bimanual coordination showed relative prevalence of integrated structure rather than independent structure. However, a clear explanation has not been suggested regarding appearances of parallel structures when performing bimanual tapping tasks which were either very complicated or extremely fast. This study was designed to provide appropriate explanation for this question by manipulating complexity (4:3 & 5:4) and speed (40 & 60 cpm) of rhythm and having participants perform a series of bimanual tapping tasks with various combinations of those two components of rhythm. Coordination structures were analyzed for each case with advanced-level pianists who have relatively consistent coordination structure. The results showed the percentage of independent structures increased as their movements were sped up. A similar pattern was not observed for rhythmic complexity. Meanwhile, the stability of their performance measured by distortion of ideal time interval decreased as rhythmic complexity and speed increased. These findings were discussed more in the aspect of event rate where both rhythmic complexity and speed were incorporated.
