국문 초록

이 논문에서는 유럽중세대학에서 학문의 자유가 탄생하게 된 역사에 대해 탐구하고 있다. 이를 위해 두 가지의 역사적 사건, 곧 대학-도시간 갈등과 교황권 대분열에 대해 집중적으로 검토하였다. 타운-가운 충돌은 교회와 왕들과 다른 사회 기구로부터 자치권을 확보하려는 대학의 투쟁이었다. 교황권 대분열은 악마의 중재자가 되어야 했던 대학에게 부여된 모순이었지만 동시에 대학이 마침내 학문적 자유의 뿌리를 키워낼 수 있었던 초월적 자양분이었다. 교황권 대분열 이전에 철학은 신학의 하녀일 뿐이었으나, 이후로 대학은 왕뿐만 아니라 교회로부터도 간섭받을 수 없는 연구의 자율권을 장악하게 되었다. 그것은 세 계와 신으로부터 독립된 중립적이고 자유로운 학문의 영토인 학문사회, 곧 아카데미아가 탄생했다는 것을 의미한다. 결론적으로 학문의 자유는 중세 유럽에서 탄생한 대학의 존재론적 근원으로 확립 발전되었으며, 이후 유럽의 대학들이 서구 과학문명의 총아로서 발전할 수 있는 근원이 된 것으로 파악된다. 이같은 서구 중세 대학에서의 학문의 자유 발전사는 아시아 대학들의 미래를 위한 중요한 시사를 하고 있다.

영문 초록

This article is an inquiry about the history of academic freedom of the medieval European university. The two big resources in the history of the European medieval university were reviewed: the town-gown conflicts and the great papal schism. The town-gown conflicts was the battle field of university’s struggle to secure its autonomy from the town and other social organizations from churches and kings. The great papal schism was the contradictory but transcendental domain where the university as the devil’s arbitrator could finally nurtured the roots of academic freedom. It was not until the schism that even the philosophy was the maid of theology. Now the university seized its autonomy of study which cannot be sensored by the church as well as the king. It could have secured the real neutral and free academia as an independent sovereignty from the world and God.
