“좋은 학교” 사례 연구: 중산층 지역에 있는 혁신중학교교장의 학교운영과 학부모의 반응

국문 초록

이 연구는 중산층 거주지역에 있는 한 혁신중학교(보람중) 교장이 어떻게 학교를 운영하며 그에 대한 중산층 학부모들의 반응이 어떠한가를 조사한 질적 사례 연구이다. 입시중심교육을 극복하기 위해서 노력하는 혁신학교에 대하여 자녀의 입시경쟁 력을 중시하는 중산층학부모들의 반응을 탐구하는 것은 우리 사회에서 좋은 학교에 대한 논의와 실천을 위하여 보다 현실적합성 있는 시사점을 줄 것이라고 기대한다. 수집 자료는 해석적 분석을 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 보람중은 교장의 일관성 있는 학 교운영철학과 문제해결을 위한 적극성, 수업 전문성을 위한 적극 지원, 그리고 학교 질서와 안전 유지, 학생존중과 교사들의 열의, 학부모의 교육에 대한 높은 관심과 참여란 특성을 보였다. 이는 학자들이 제시한 좋은 학교의 특성과 공교육의 정상화와도 가깝다. 연구자는 중산층 지역에서 공교육의 정상화가 실현되는 좋은 학교가 되기 위해서는 무엇보다 학부모들을 학교운영과정에서 공감적 협력자로 만들 필요가 있으며, 초등학교와 중등학교에 이르기까지 학교운영철학이 일관성 있게 연계될 필요가 있음을 주장하였다. 그리고 중산층 학부모들의 경쟁적인 학력관의 변화 또는 적어도 자제력을 발휘시키기 위해서는 이들이 학교운영에 만족할 수 있어야 하며, 그러려면 무엇보다 학생 지도를 위한 교사 열의와 전문성 제고를 위한 적극적인 노력과 지원이 이루어질 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

The current research investigates an innovative junior high school in a middle class residential area with focus on the relation between the principal and parents. The principal values “a happy school” in which students can feel intellectual pleasure in the classroom by promoting higher order thinking abilities and cooperative group activities. To do so, he makes an effort to enhance teaching expertise through a learning community for teachers which provides a supportive and spontaneous environment. However, the principal faces severe opposition from middle class parents who value competitive schooling and better educational credential. As the principal does not give up his philosophy, some oppositional parents leave the school. After experiencing such difficulties and conflict, the principal makes effort to be more empathic with not only teachers but also parents while pursuing his fundamental educational philosophy. By virtue of such ways, many parents increasingly show support for the schooling. In order to overcome test-oriented schooling which has been a chronic social issue in Korean society, at this school the principal practices a type of transformative leadership style. Thus, for the sake of moving beyond competitive test-oriented schooling and practicing good schooling, it is important for the principals to guide the middle class parents to become more empathic and cooperative towards the school mission. This calls for principals and administrators to actively support the enhancement of teaching expertise based on the spontaneity and passion of teachers.
