협동학습이 한국 EFL학습자의 영어 말하기 능력과 불안에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구는 협동학습을 통한 교양영어 수업이 학습자의 영어 말하기 능력과 불안에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 알아보고자 하였다. 15주간 실시한 본 연구에 실험반 30명, 통제반 29명의 학생들이 참여하였다. 자료 수집을 위하여 실험반과 통제반 학생들의 사전⦁사후 영어 말하기 능력 시험과 영어 말하기 불안 검증 설문조사를 실시하였다. 또한 협동학습을 경험한 학생들의 태도와 인식을 알아보기 위해 실험반을 대상으로 사후 인터뷰를 시행하였다. 자료 분석 결과, 협동학습을 경험한 실험반의 학생들이 그렇지 않은 통제반의 학생들보다 영어 말하기 능력에 더 많은 향상을 보였다. 또한 영어 말하기 불안 설문조사에서는 실험반 학생들은 영어 말하기 불안에 있어 감소를 보인 반면, 통제반의 학생들은 오히려 불안이 상승하는 변화를 보였다. 협동학습을 경험한 실험반 학습자들과의 사후 인터뷰 결과, 학습자들이 협동학습에 대한 태도와 인식이 긍정적임을 보였다. 특히, 자신감이 낮았던 학습자는 동료 학습 자가 과제를 수행해나가는 과정을 관찰하는 계기를 통해 점차 학습과제 수행에 대한 자신감이 상승하였을 뿐 아니라 영어 말하기나 발표에 대한 불안이 감소되었다는 반응을 보였다. 본 연구는 협동학습을 통하여 학습자의 영어 말하기 능력 향상과 말하기 불안 감소의 효과를 얻을 수 있는 가능성을 보여주는 연구라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of cooperative learning on Korean EFL learners English speaking ability and anxiety. Fifty-nine students, divided into an experimental and a control group, participated in the fifteen week long study. For data collection of the study, the pre- and post- English speaking tests were administered and the pre- and post- English speaking anxiety questionnaires were conducted. In addition, in order to look into participants attitudes and perspectives toward English learning experiences through cooperative learning, the post- interview with 10 volunteers was carried out. The results were as follows. Firstly, English learning of the experimental group showed more improvement in English speaking ability than that of the control group. Secondly, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in English speaking anxiety, however, the control one resulted in an increase in English speaking anxiety. Thirdly, the students who participated in a post-interview showed positive attitudes and perceptions toward cooperative learning, expressing that having chances to observe their classmate s learning process helped them challenge their tasks, enhance their confidence and lessen their speaking anxiety. The finding indicates that English learning through cooperative learning has positive effects on both the improvement in Korean EFL learners English speaking and the decrease in students’ speaking anxiety.
