공매도 대상기업의 재무적 특성

국문 초록

본 논문은 국내자본시장 상장기업을 대상으로 공매도 거래의 대상이 되는 기업의 재무적 특성에 대하여 연구하였다. 공매도란 소유하지 않은 주식을 우선 빌린 후 매도한 후 추후에 자본시장 에서 다시 구매한 후 갚는 거래이다. 일반적인 주식구매를 통한 투자와 비교하여 투자가 불편하며 위험이 큰 특징이 있기 때문에 상대적으로 조심스럽게 투자의사결정을 할 수 밖에 없다. 공매도에 대하여 자본시장 참여자와 연구자들은 해당 투자의사 결정이 자본시장의 효율성을 증가시킬 것이라는 견해와 함께 오히려 자본시장의 효율성을 낮출것이라는 상반된 견해도 함께 가지고 있다. 이와 같은 상반된 견해에도 불구하고 아직까지 국내에서 공매도와 관련된 실증연구는 상대적으로 부족하며, 특히 공매도가 회계정보와 자본시장에 주는 영향에 대한 연구와 회계정보 이용자로서의 공매도자의 역할과 관련된 연구는 상대적으로 부족하다. 이러한 배경에서 본 연구는 2008년도부터 2012년도까지의 국내자본시장 공매도 일별 거래내역 데이터를 이용하여 공매도 거래량과 재무변수들의 관련성에 대하여 분석하였다. 구체적으로 공매도 거래량은 ∆X·∆ATO·부채비율·손실여부 및 대주주지분과는 음(-)의 관계를, PER·MTB·기업 규모·지수포함여부(KOSPI200, KOSDAQ100) 및 전기 초과수익률과는 양(+)의 관련성을 가지는 것으로 보고되었다. 본 연구를 통하여 공매도가 많이 이루어지고 있는 기업의 재무적 특성을 파악하여 공매도 투자에 대한 이해와 투자행태를 보다 정확하게 이해할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. 또한 본 연구의 결과는 공매도가 나타나는 기업의 재무·시장 특성을 확인하여 공매도와 관련된 후속 연구에 기초를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 기대하며, 향후 투자자들의 투자의사 결정과 금융당국의 공매도관련 제도의 수립·적용에도 도움을 줄 것으로 예상한다.

영문 초록

This study reviewed the financial characteristics of listed companies in the domestic capital market that are a subject of short sales. A short sale is a trade in the capital market where stock that is not in possession is loaned, then sold, and then purchased again later. There are big characteristics compared to investments through general stock purchase, such as inconvenience and risk of investments. Therefore, investment decisions are made relatively cautiously. Capital market participants and researchers have conflicting views on short sales, that such investment decisions will increase versus rather decrease capital market efficiency. Despite conflicting views on the matter, there is a relative lack of empirical studies on short sales in Korea, and there is particularly a lack of studies related to the effects of short sales on accounting information and the capital market, and to the role of short sellers as accounting information users. Therefore, this study analyzed the relationship between short sale volume and financial variables using data on daily short sales in the domestic capital market from 2008 to 2012. It was reported that short sale trade volume had a negative , -) relationship with ∆X, ∆ATO, debt ratio, whether or not there was a loss, and major shareholder stocks, and a positive , +) relationship with PER, MTB, corporate scale, whether or not there was an index , KOSPI200, KOSDAQ100), and excess earning rate of the previous quarter. This study is expected to aid understanding of the financial characteristics of companies where short sales are frequent, and short sale investments, and a clearer understanding of forms of investment. In addition, the results of this study are expected to confirm the financial and market characteristics of companies that conduct short sales, to provide a foundation for related follow-up studies, and to aid the decisions of investors, and establishment and application of short sales related systems of financial authorities in the future.
