딱지본 옛소설 『사명당전四溟堂傳』의 판본과 유통 맥락

국문 초록

이 글에서는 1920년대 발간된 딱지본 옛소설 『사명당전』의 형성 기반, 다양한 판본의 성격과 특성, 유통 경로를 규명하고자 했다. 1910년대 이후 일제의 대대적인 금서 조치로 출판지형이 크게 위축된 이후 출판사들은 딱지본 옛소설을 발간함으로써 이러한 변화에 적극적으로 대처해 나가고 있었다. 특히, 1910년대 후반부터 1920년대 중후반으로 갈수록 조선의 역사위인전기가 양산되었는데, 이는 딱지본 역사소설이 '조선적인 것'과 그 정체성을 강조하던 문화민족주의와 관련 있을 뿐만 아니라 일제 식민지 지배 아래에서 독자들의 영웅 출현에 대한 기대와 열망을 충족시키는 데 적절한 양식이었기 때문이다. 1920년대 중후반 딱지본 옛소설 『사명당전』이 4종이나 생산ㆍ향유된 것은 이러한 문화적 기반에 힘입은 바 크다. 근대계몽기 인물기사와는 달리 딱지본 옛소설 『사명당전』은 저항적 민족주의적 색채를 탈각시키고, 상업주의와 맞물려 흥미 위주의 통속성에 기댄 측면이 강하다. 근대계몽기 재발행된 홍양호의 『해동명장전』(1907)의 인물전기에 살을 덧붙이면서 사실성에서 허구성을 강화하는 방향으로 나아갔던 것이다. 또한 '서산대사전'의 부록으로 다루어지던 서술 체재와 형식을 벗어나 독립적인 역사ㆍ전기소설로 나아가는 양상을 띠었다. 무엇보다도 『임진록』에서 발견할 수 있는 사명당의 신이한 능력을 비롯한 설화적 요소, 병부상서 석성의 아내와 정곤수의 일화를 차용하거나 변용한 야담적 요소, 가정비극에서 자주 등장하는 복수 모티프들을 적극 수용하면서 통속성을 강화하는 과정을 밟았다. 우선, 전체 5장의 회장체로 구성된 덕흥서림본 『西山大師와 四溟堂』(1926)은 통속적 색채를 강조하기 보다는 근대 역사ㆍ전기문학과 마찬가지로 역사적 사실에 초점을 맞춘 계몽성이 강한 역사소설이었다. 둘째, 영창서관본 『님진병난 四溟堂實記』(1926)는 서사내용이 가장 풍부한 판본 가운데 하나였다. 전체적으로 사명당의 일대기를 다루고 있다는 점에서 역사소설에 가깝지만, 출가 이전 가정 비극을 주류화하여 통속적 재미를 추구하고 있었다. 출가(出家) 전의 서사는 판본에 따라 부분적인 차이가 있지만, 이후 발간되는 판본에서 출가 이전 사명당 행적의 밑그림으로 작용하게 된다. 셋째, 회동서관본 『道僧 四溟堂(1928)』은 내용에서 부분적인 차이가 있지만 영창서관본의 변주에 가까운 소설이었다. 물론 영창서관본에 비해 출가 후 서사는 사명당을 중심으로 체계적으로 전개되고 있었다. 넷째, 신구서림본 『四溟堂傳』(1928)은 영창서관본을 발췌 편집하여 압축적으로 요약한 판본이었다. 판권을 넘겼다고 해도 좋을 정도로 영창서관본의 체재와 서사구조를 고스란히 반복하고 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper aims at examining the background of the ttakjibon old novels "Story of Samyeongdang" published in the 1920s and the characteristics and distribution channels of its various versions. As a result of the extensive publication ban imposed during the Japanese colonial rule in the 1910s, ttakjibon old novels were mass-produced, most of which were biographies of the great men from the Joseon Dynasty. This is not only because ttakjibon old novels were related to cultural nationalism which focused on the things representing the Joseon era and the identity of the time but because they were the most suitable style that could meet the expectation and desire of readers who wished to see the emergence of a hero under the Japanese colonial rule. This cultural background contributed greatly to the trend where four different versions of ttakjibon old novels of "Story of Samyeongdang" were produced and enjoyed in the mid to late 1920s. First, Deokheung-Seorim's version published in 1926 consisting of five chapters was a historical novel with a strong tendency to enlightenment concentrating more on historical fact like modern history or biography literature than on popular trends. Second, Yeongchang-Seogwan's version created in 1926 was the version with the most narratives. This version was close to a historical novel as it described the entire life of Samyeongdang, but it also sought popular fun by main streaming the domestic tragedy he experienced before he became a Buddhist monk. Narratives about his joining of the Buddhist priesthood varied by part but served as a base for future versions. Third, Hoedong-Seogwan's version published in 1928 showed differences in some parts but could be said as a variation of the Yeongchang-Seogwan's version. Narratives about his life after he became a Buddhist monk, however, presented a more organized development with a focus on Samyeongdang himself than the Yeongchang-Seogwan's version. Fourth, Singu-Seorim's version released in 1928 was a summary of Yeongchang-Seogwan's version by excerpting and editing it. It is fair to say that Yeongchang- Seogwan's version might have transferred its copyright because the two versions shared very similar formats and narrative structure.
