야담의 꿈에 나타난 욕망의 실현과 반조(返照)

국문 초록

야담에 자주 나타나는 꿈 모티프들을 찾아내고, 그것들이 서사적 맥락 속에서 어떤 의미를 함축하며 어떤 기능을 하는지를 살폈다. 꿈은 개인의 욕망이나 의지를 담는다. 꿈속에서 주체는 자기 욕망을 실현하거나 의지를 관철시키는 것이다. 이와 반대로 꿈은 초월적 존재의 힘이나 운명과도 관련된다. 꿈은 현실에서는 용납되기 어려운 상황조차 용납되는 이유를 제공해준다. 그래서 현실에서 용납되기 어려운 상황에 직면한 인물이 꿈을 빙자하여 곤경을 극복한다. 예언 혹은 예시에 해당하는 꿈은 사건의 전개에도 중요한 역할을 한다. 암시적 꿈과 해몽의 과정은 첫 단계의 상식적이고 비관적인 해석을 재조정하고 재해석하여 반전을 이뤄내고 궁극적으로 부정적 상황을 낙관적 상황으로 바꾸는 역동적 경험을 하게 한다. 야담에서의 꿈은 서술자로 하여금 시간을 초월하거나 역전시키는 것을 가능하게 해준다. 꿈이 공간적 한계를 초월하게 해주는 양상은 더 다채롭다. 꿈은 동떨어진 두 공간의 모습을 동시적으로 보여준다. 보통 사람이 혼령의 세계를 경험하거나 혼령을 만나는 것도 꿈이 새로운 공간을 경험하게 해주기에 가능한 일이다. 꿈은 산 사람과 죽은 사람의 혼령이 소통하는 공간과 기회를 마련해준다. 야담 서사에서 꿈은 욕망 및 반조와 관련하여 두 개의 상충된 길을 보여준다. <현초몽용만상폭(現宵夢龍滿裳幅)>에서 전형적으로 확인할 수 있는 것은 욕망 실현을 위한 장치이다. 꿈은 현실에서 불가능할 욕망을 성취시켜줌으로써 서사에 활력을 불어넣어준다. 꿈은 없던 욕망의 대상을 존재하게 만들어 꿈을 꾼 사람의 행복을 증대시켜주는 '형성적' 기능을 가지는 것이다. 이와는 달리 <험이몽서백식전신(驗異夢西伯識前身)>에서 볼 수 있듯, 꿈은 주인공을 비롯한 등장인물들이 욕망이 충족된 과정과 방법에 대한 비밀을 알게 해주는 역할을 한다. 등장인물이 그간 지내오면서 잘 이해가 되지는 않았지만 어쩔 수 없이 스쳐 지내온 삶의 대목에 대한 뒤늦은 깨달음을 가능하게 한다. 그런 점에서 꿈은 '반조적'이며 '성찰적'이다. 이때 꿈에는 사람의 욕망이나 계산이 개입되지 않은 축원이나 염원이 깃들어 있다. 이 두 지향이 가장 뚜렷하게 나타났다는 것은 욕망과 관련하여 주체가 상이한 자리에 서 있었기 때문으로 보인다. 즉, 주체가 욕망을 성취하는 것을 여전히 간절한 소망으로 간직하고 있는 경우에는 형성적 꿈이, 주체가 욕망을 이미 성취한 지점에서 그 과정을 되돌아볼 여유를 가지게 된 경우에는 반조적 꿈이 선택된다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper attempts to analyze dream motifs frequently incorporated in Yadam and their meanings and functions in the narrative context of Yadam. Dreams reflect individual's desire and will. Subjects realize their desire and carry out their will in dream. On the other hand, dreams are connected to supernatural power and fate. Dreams provide justifications to inexcusable situations, which allows people who committed unacceptable actions in reality to be extricated from their troubles. Dream has a foreshadowing and suggestive function as well. Thus dream plays a significant role in unfolding and solving problems in Yadam's narrative. Suggestive dreams and the process of interpreting them allow readers to have powerful experience of Yadam's narrative. Dreams in Yadam enable the narrator to transcend or reverse time. Dreams allow the narrator to transcend spatial limit in various ways. Dreams make it possible to present two separate places simultaneously. Thus people can experience the spiritual world and encounter the spiritual beings in the world of Yadam. Dreams present the place and opportunity that the living and the dead can meet and communicate. Dreams reveal contradiction in the narrative of Yadam. In Hyunchomongyongmansangpok(現宵夢龍滿裳幅) dream is a conventional device of realizing desire. Dream invigorates the narrative by having impossible desire fulfilled. Dream performs a formative function which intensifies the dreamer's happiness by materializing the object of desire. On the other hand, in Humyimongsuhbaksikjunsin(驗異夢西伯識前身) dream exposes the secrets in the process and method of fulfilling desire to the characters. Here dream is retrospective and introspective, and represents people's blessings and longing without desire and calculation. Dream's two distinctive functions reflect subject's contradictory attitude toward desire. Formative dream functions most evidently when the subject still yearns for realizing his desire. Retrospective dream appears when the subject already achieved his desire and could afford to reflect on the process.
