이 글은 이구월(李久月, 1904~?)의 생애를 가능한 대로 확인하고, 그가 남긴 문학작품들을 찾아서, 특히 광복 이전 그가 집중 추구했던 아동문학의 활동 면모와 작품 세계를 처음으로 밝히고자 한 것이다. 주요 논의 내용을 요약하여 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이구월은 필명이며, 본명은 이석봉(李錫鳳)이다. 1904년 마산에서 태어난 이구월은 1925년부터 김해보통학교 근무를 시작으로 교직에 종사했다. 1928년부터 1936년까지 통영보통학교에서 9년간 봉직하는 동안 문학 활동을 집중 펼쳤다. 광복 후에 동시집 『새봄』(1949)을 간행하고, 1962년까지 생존을 확인할 수 있다. 이후 그가 부산에서 사망했다고 하나 정확한 사망년도는 아직 알 수 없다. 둘째, 이구월이 남긴 문학작품으로 현재까지 필자가 찾은 작품은 시 20편, 동시ㆍ동요 72편(실제 발표 작품은 70편), 동화 4편, 수필ㆍ기타 7편으로 총 103편이다. 셋째, 이구월은 동시ㆍ동요, 동화 작품을 주로 쓴 아동문학가이다. 특히 동시ㆍ동요를 주로 창작했는데, 『조선일보』, 『중외일보』, 『동아일보』의 일간지 매체에 주로 작품을 발표하다가 『신소년』, 『별나라』로 매체를 옮기면서 프로아동문학가로서 활발한 활동을 했다. 넷째, 이구월의 동시ㆍ동요는 초기(1928~1929. 8), 중기(1929. 9~1933), 후기(1934~)로 구분될 수 있다. 초기의 동시ㆍ동요는 자연 현상과 자연적 대상들을 중요한 소재로 삼은 작품들로, 아이들의 동심을 밝고 긍정적인 시각에서 묘사한 작품들이 주류를 이룬다. 중기의 동시ㆍ동요 작품들은 프로아동문학 활동의 산물들이다. 그의 프로동요 작품들은 프롤레타리아동요집 『불별』(1931. 3)에 8명의 동인들 중 가장 많이 게재되었는데, 이들 7편의 작품을 통해 그 면모를 뚜렷이 파악할 수 있다. 이들 작품들은 아동들이 겪거나 보는 계급모순의 현실을 주로 부각시키는 작품들인데, 그렇다고 계급투쟁의 의지를 강력하게 표명하지는 않았다. 후기의 작품들은 초기 동시ㆍ동요의 세계로 복귀한 면모를 보여주었다. 이구월의 아동문학 활동은 거의 통영지역에서 이루어졌다. 그런데 그는 당시 통영지역 문인들과 소통하기보다 프로아동문학의 길을 가면서 진주지역과 연고를 가진 이들을 비롯하여 전국의 프로아동문학을 추구했던 이들과 주로 소통하고 어울렸다.

영문 초록

This is about the life and works of author Lee Gu-wol (1904 - unknown). I have researched his life as much as possible to find his literary works. This is the first research of Lee Gu-wol's and the world of his works in inquiring into children's literature. The summary of my major discussions are below. First, Lee, Gu-wol is a pen name and his real name is Lee, Suk-bong. He was born in Masan in 1904 and he started to work as a teacher at Kimhae elemantary school from 1925. Between 1928 to 1936 he focused on literary works while working at Tongyeong elementary school for 9 years. After liberation, he published 'Sae-bom'(the New Spring), a collection of children's poems (1949). It has been confirmed that he was still alive until 1962. It is believed that he passed away in Busan but no one knows when exactly. Second, his literary works; So far I have found 20 poems, 72 children's poems and songs (actual released works are 70), 4 children's stories, 7 essays etc, a total of 103 works. His work will be added if more items are found. Third, Lee, Gu-wol is a children's author whose main works involved children's poems, songs, and stories. His main works were children's poems and songs which were published in the Chosun Daily news, Jungweo Daily news, Donga Daily news. He started to write for the 'Sin-sonyun' (the New Boy), 'Byul-nara' (the Star Land) and became a professional children's author at this point. Forth, his children's poems, songs are divided into early works (1928 - Aug. 1929), mid works (Sep. 1929 - 1933), and the later works (1934 - unknown) His early poems and songs are subject of natural phenomenon and objects and describe the purity of childhood in a bright and positive point of view. The mid works are the outcome of his professional children's literary work activities. His professional song works appeared the most among 8 fellow authors in proletarian children's song collections 'Bul-byul' (the Firing Star) (Mar. 1931), we can understand his aspects clearly throughout his 7works during this period. These works high light the class contradiction's that children experience or see but he did not express these struggles strongly. Later works show that he came back to the early poems and songs' world. Lee Gu-wol's children's literary activities were in Tongyoung area. However he didn't communicate with any other authors in that area. As he was on the verge of becoming professional he only communicated with fellow professional authors and hung out with Jinju area fellow authors and national professional authors. This is the reason why we can't tie his work to only the Tongyoung area.
