책문(策文)으로 본 조선시대 과거사의 이면

국문 초록

본고에서는 조선시대 과거사에서 발생되었던 대표적인 파방사건 중에서 책문(策文)이 문제가 되었던 세 가지 사례를 분석하였다. 특히 『조선왕조실록』의 기록만으로 파악하기 어려운 부분을 책문의 원문(텍스트) 분석을 통하여 당시 정치적 문제와 현실상황을 읽어낼 수 있었다. 첫째, 이원정ㆍ이담명 부자의 경우는 책문(策文)의 구체적인 내용보다는 책문의 형식에 반드시 들어가야 하는 문구와 그것이 빠짐으로서 채점관과의 표식이 될 수 있다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, 임숙영의 경우는 광해군의 비, 유씨와 그의 오빠 유희분의 정치간섭이 심하다고 느낀 임숙영의 책문으로 문제에 조응하지 않고 자신이 문제를 다시 책정하여 임금에게 간하는 논란이 될 만한 행동이었으나 직언을 하기 위한 충정에서 양해되었다. 책문이 아닌 상소의 형태였어야 한다는 광해군의 지적과 책문의 역할과 의미가 컸다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 아울러 임숙영의 파방사건으로 인해 궁류시를 지어 죽음을 당한 권필의 경우를 보아도 당시 권신과 조정대신간의 알력이 얼마나 컸는지 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 나세찬의 경우는 조선왕조실록에는 생략되어 전하는 그의 책문을 통해 권신 김안로를 풍자하는 고사를 인용한 것이 문제가 되었음을 그의 책문 전체를 분석하여 확인할 수 있었다. 이번 연구를 통해 막연하게 정치적인 사건이나 임금의 비위를 건드려 문제가 되었다는 식의 과거 답안지가 실제로는 책문(策文)에 한정된 경우가 많았고 책문의 문체적 특성상 당시 조정에 대한 비판이 불가피하게 전제될 수밖에 없었다는 사실을 알게 되었다. 특히, 책문의 구체적인 텍스트 분석이 수행된다면 당시 시대적 폐단이 무엇이었는지, 왕이 고민했던 부분은 무엇이었는지 등의 다양한 문학적 사회적 부분을 고찰해낼 수 있다는 단서를 발견하게 된 성과를 얻을 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This manuscript analysed three of the typical cancellation cases about Chaekmun(策文) that were issued in the past Chosun. Especially by analysing Chaekmun(策文)’s text, it was possible to read out the then political problems and situations, which were hard to understand only by the record of 『The true record of the Chosun Dynasty』. Firstly, in Lee Won-jung(李元禎), Lee Dam-meong(李聃明)’s case, it was able to notice that the missing of key phrase in Chaekmun(策文)’s form can be the sign between the examiners rather than the specific contents. Secondly, in Lim Suk-young(任叔英)’s case, he re-made his own question and expostulate with the King that Lord Gwang-hae’s wife and her brother Ryu Hee-bun’s meddle in politics were immoderate, which should have been issued but did not because it was a loyal advice to the King. It indicates Lord Gwang-hae’s comment that it should have been the form of Sangso(上疏) not Chaekmun(策文), and the role of Chaekmun(策文) was important. Also by looking at the case of Gweonpil who died because of his ‘GoongRyuSi(宮柳詩)’ about Lim Sukyoung’s cancellation affair, it was able to check how big the friction between courtiers and government officers were. Lastly, Na Sae-chan(羅世纘) was discussed by citing a satire on courtier Kim An-ro(金安老) which is skipped in 『The true record of the Chosun Dynasty』 in his Chaekmun(策文). Through this research, it revealed that the problem occurred abstractly by answer papers about political issues or offending King is actually limited to Chaekmun(策文), and it is inevitable not to criticise government on account of the characteristic of Chaekmun(策文). Particularly, obtained good results that there are clues about the then negative effects or what was the King’s worries and stuff, if we analysis Chaekmun(策文)’s text concretely.
