국문 초록

본 논문은 과거 시험장의 풍경을 살펴본 것이다. 조선시대 실시된 과거시험은 그 종류와 횟수가 무수히 많기 때문에, 科場의 풍경을 일반화하여 말하기 어렵다. 그래서 본 논문은 특히 無名子 尹愭(1741∼1826)가 남긴 기록을 통해서, 과장의 풍경을 살펴보았다. 과거장의 모습에 대해서 윤기만큼 많은 자료를 남긴 사람은 없다. 윤기의 눈에 포착된 과장은 국가의 인재를 선발하는 공정한 장으로서의 모습이 아니었다. 권력을 가진 자, 재력을 가진 자들이 자신의 자제를 합격시키기 위해 부정과 부패를 자행하는 타락한 현장이다. 여기에 시험을 공정하게 관리하고 채점해야 할 시관이 부정에 개입되어 있었다. 한편 당쟁의 폐해는 과거 합격자 선정에도 나타나서 집권당이 합격자를 독식하기까지 하였다. 윤기가 파악한 과장의 문란을 통해서, 우리는 18,9세기 행해진 과거는 국가의 교육 및 인재 선발과 밀접한 관련이 있는 긍정적인 제도로서의 기능을 상실하고 있었음을 알 수 있었다. 가장 공정하게 이루어져야 할 제도인 과거 시험이 재력가나 권세가의 횡포로 멋대로 운영되고 있다는 현실에서 조선조 정부는 국가로서 사회 정의를 실현하거나 합리성을 가질 최소한의 물리적 정신적인 힘조차 가지지 못했음을 살펴볼 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the common sights of the gwageo exam rooms. It is not easy to generalize the gwageo exam taken in the Joseon Dynasty period from the findings because there were numerous kinds and frequencies of the exam. Therefore, the paper looks at the common sights in the gwageo exam rooms through the record by Yun Ki(1741∼1826), a mediocrity. No one has left many materials on the real faces of the gwageo exam like Yun Ki. The gwageo exam room that has come to his eye was not a fair system to select talented people. It was the corrupt scene where powerful and rich people committed all kinds of corruption and illegality to pass their son. Examiners should manage the gwageo exam fairly, however, they were involved in cheating on the exam. The harmful effect of the party strife was also reflected on selecting successful candidates and a ruling party possessed them exclusively. The gwageo exam should be linked closely with national education and selection of talented people, but we know through disorder and confusion of the gwageo exam caught by Youn, Ki that the exam taken in 18th and 19th century lost its function as a positive system. The exam should be managed in a fairest way, however, it was run by the tyranny of the wealth and the power as they pleased. We can see the government of Joseon Dynasty did not have a minimal physical and mental capacity to realize a social justice and to demonstrate rationality.
