과거를 통해 본 조선후기 서얼가의 學知생성과 家學의 성립

국문 초록

본고는 昌寧 成氏 桑谷公派 서얼가문에서 16世부터 22世까지 7세대 동안 연속해서 생원진사시와 문과 합격자를 배출하고 또 조선조 서얼출신 문과급제자 중 가장 높은 품계를 받은 인물 중 한 사람을 배출하는 등 이 집안이 조선후기를 대표하는 서얼 명문가로 자리매김하는 데 있어 가문적 배경과 학적 역량을 비롯하여 ‘詩社를 통한 과거시험의 준비와 합격’이 중요한 이유를 차지하고 있음을 규명하였다. 이를 위해 족보와 읍지, 향교지, 방목 등의 자료를 두루 검토하여 조선조 서얼출신 생원진사시 합격자와 문과급제자 및 포천지역 생원진사시 합격자와 문과급제자의 현황을 파악하고, 창녕 성씨 상곡공파 서얼출신 생원진사시 합격자와 문과급제자 현황과의 비교분석을 통해, 창녕 성씨 상곡공파 서얼출신의 과거합격 비율과 품계를 고찰하였다. 또 창녕 성씨 상곡공파 서얼가는 76년간 4차례에 걸쳐 고향 포천에서 詩社를 지속적으로 결성하고 功令業을 가르쳐 많은 수의 과거 합격자를 배출하였다. 시사를 결성하여 공령업을 가르치는 것을 슬로건으로 내세워 과거합격에 대한 강한 의지를 표명하고 실제 여느 양반가문보다 많은 수의 과거합격자를 배출한 것이다. 이때의 공령업이란 단순한 공령문자가 아닌 仁義의 내용을 담은 공령문자를 가르치고 배운다는 단서를 달았다. 창녕 성씨 상곡공파 서얼가가 시사를 통해 공령업을 가르쳐 과거에 대한 집중적이고 계획된 대비를 하여 많은 수의 합격자를 낸 만큼, 4차례의 시사와 그로 인한 많은 수의 과거합격자 배출은 창녕 성씨 상곡공파 서얼가의 학지를 생성하고 가학을 성립하는데 중요한 견인 역할을 한 것으로 보인다. 본고를 통해 한 서얼가문이 조선후기를 대표하는 서얼명문가로 자리잡기 위해 기울인 현실적이며 집단적인 노력을 확인함으로써 신분과 과거제도의 상관 관계를 비롯한 조선후기 사회 문화사의 한 단면을 엿볼 수 있다.

영문 초록

This article was intended to investigate the reason why ‘the preparation of Gwageo exam through Sisa(poetry society)’ is important for the writers of Seoeol birth of Sanggok gongpa, a sub-branch of family of Changnyeong in establishing as a nobel family of Seoeol. This family had produced many successful applicants for examination of Saengwon, Jinsa and civil service examination, and men of the highest rank for seven generations in a row from the 16th to the 22nd in the late Joseon dynasty. First, I considered the situation of successful applicants for Saengwon, Jinsa and civil service examination, of Seoeol birth, and those for Saengwon, Jinsa and civil service examination, from Pocheon district by reviewing Mungwa Bangmok and Sama Bangmok along with Changnyeong Seongssi Songgok Gongpa-bo(the genealogical record), and the ratio of successful applicants of Seoeol birth of Sanggok gongpa, a sub-branch of family of Changnyeong was found to be high, which showed it was an important factor in establishing the family as a representitive noble family of Seoeol in the Joseon dynasty. Besides, the Seoeol family of Changnyeong seong family Sanggok gongpa had produced many successful applicants of Gwageo examinations while consistently organizing Sisas four times in 76 years and teaching Gongnyeongeop. As appeared by their slogan, ‘organization of Sisa and teaching of Gongnyeongeop’. four Sisas and large amount of successful applicants played an important role in creating their cognition and establishing home scholarship. Their practical and collective efforts to become a noble family of Seoeol birth that represented the late Joseon dynasty, reveal a cross section of society and cultural history of late Joseon dynasty including Gwageon examination system.
