일제강점기 3대 전래동화집의 성격과 그 편찬 배경

국문 초록

본고는 한국의 전래 동화사에 있어서 구비 동화가 기록화되기 시작한 일제강점기의 3대 전래동화집의 성격과 그 편찬 배경을 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 전래동화의 장르적 정체성을 규명해 보았다. 오랜 역사를 거치며 우리 민족에게 향유된 구비문학 중의 동화류를 ‘구비동화’로 명명했다. 이는 ‘전승 매체의 분화로 인한 변개’가 이루어지기 이전 구비문학 중의 동화류를 뜻하는 것이다. 일제 강점기 때 신식 인쇄술이 발달하고 서구식 학교 교육이 이루어지기 시작하면서 전래동화집이 출현한다. 여기에 구비동화를 이야기의 원형으로 하면서 글이라는 매체로 장르 변개를 이룬 것 즉, 전래동화가 수록된다. 이것이 바로 전래동화집이라 할 수 있다. 단, 전래동화는 근대에 등장했지만, 우리에게 있어서 동화의 역사는 구비동화가 있어왔던 근대 이전의 시기를 모두 수용해야 한다는 점을 분명히 하였다. 최초의 전래동화집인 『조선동화집』(1924)은 조선총독부에서 일본어로 편찬되었다. 이는 당시 조선의 아동들을 식민지 국민으로 만들기 위한 정책의 일환으로 일어교육을 주된 목적으로 한 것이었다. 2년 뒤에 심의린에 의해 최초의 우리말 동화집인 『조선동화대집』이 편찬되었다. 교육자이자 한글학자인 심의린은 이 책의 편찬을 통해 우리말 교육 및 민족 문화 보존을 위해 일제에 저항하였다. 1940년에 박영만은 『조선전래동화집』을 편찬한다. 그는 독립운동가였는데 이 책의 편찬을 통해 일제의 민족 말살 정책에 저항하고, 우리 민족 문화를 지키기 위해 노력하였다. 침략적 의도이든 애국계몽적 의도이든, 당시 ‘아동’은 각자의 목표를 실현하기 위한 대상으로 가장 유용하고 희망적인 존재였다. 이들을 식민지 국민으로 만들려는 일제의 노력이나, 광복의 꿈을 실현시킬 주체로 희망을 걸었던 애국지사들의 노력이 모두 동화집 발간으로 표면화되었다. 조선의 식민지화를 위해 조선의 문화와 정신을 제거하려 했던 일제와, 희망을 잃지 않고 국가의 미래를 기약하는 애국지사들의 독립 염원과 저항이 모두 전래동화집 편찬으로 이어진 것은, 다른 나라의 근대 문학에서는 볼 수 없는 우리만의 특수성이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper describes the characteristics and compilation background of the three collections of traditional fairy tales in Colonial Choson when oral fairy tales began to be recorded in the historical viewpoint of Korean traditional fairy tales. In the first step I have defined the genre identity of traditional fairy tales. I classified fairy tales in oral literatures inherited by our people through a long history as ‘oral fairy tales’, which means fairy tale genre among oral literatures before the modification caused by the split of inheritance media was established. Collections of traditional fairy tales appeared in Colonial Choson as new printing techniques were developed and western academic curriculums were introduced. In such stream the modified story genre, originated from traditional oral fairy tales, in text media format was published as a collection of traditional fairy tales. Although traditional fairy tales appeared in modern times, I clarified our fairy tales history includes all premodern times when there existed oral fairy tales. The first collection of traditional fairy tales, Choson Donghwajip(1924), was published in Japanese by the Japanese Government General of Korea. It mainly intended for Japanese education which is one of the policies to make Choson’s children as colonial people. After two years the first Korean collection of traditional fairy tales, Choson Donghwadaijip, was published by Shim Eui-rin. He as an educator and a Hangeul scholar resisted against Japan for Korean education and the preservation of national culture by the publication. Park Young-man published Choson Jeonlae Donghwajip at 1940. He, an independence activist, resisted policies to obliterate Korean nationalism and struggled to preserve Korean culture through the book’s publication. At that time, children were the most useful and hopeful creature as a subject to realize personal ideology whatever it was based on colonialism or patriotic enlightenment. The both efforts for Japanese to make Koreans as colonial people and for Korean patriots to realize the dream of independence were formulated through the publication of fairy tales. It was our unique literary characteristic distinguished with other countries’ literatures that the both Japanese attempt to obliterate Choson’s culture and nationalism for its colonialism and Korean patriots’ desire and struggling with the hope for future national independence were driven to the publication of traditional fairy tales.
