This project provides an introduction to the publication of an entire volume translated and annotated in Japanese from Zhuziyulei. Currently, I would like to introduce the activities of the group that has provided this publication. The Zhu Xi School of Neo-Confucianism has had a great effect on the East Asian world, including Japan, and its history has been long and fruitful. As Japan is said to be a “translation country” for basic academic literature of the West, the Japanese translation of academic works from the classical era to the present is easily accessible. As for the Chinese classics, we can say that Japanese translations are widely circulated and easily obtained. However, since the literature of the Zhu Xi School of Neo-Confucianism has not previously been translated into Japanese, such works as not easy to access. Nowadays, one reason there are few modern Japanese translations of this literature is that it has previously been accessed through the kun-doku reading of the text. For along time, since we have been able to read in this way, it wasn't absolutely necessary to have the text translated into Japanese. However, this is not presently the case. Even though a person is well-educated, he or she can not read Chinese classics in this way if they are not a specialist. The offering of literature of the Zhu Xi School for non-specialists has not previously been attempted. Sad to say, there are few people who have the ability to read, understand, and translate this material. In order to improve this situation, Professor Yuzo Mizoguchi, of the University of Tokyo, organized the Song-Ming Research Society in 1987, and has had the goal of completing the current translation project from Zhuziyulei. This society has held regular meetings, taking turns at translating, and has published their work in the Kyuko Journal. It is continuing to work in this way. Based on these publications, a translation and annotation from Zhuziyulei Volume 1-3 was published by Kyukoshoin. However, considering the small number of people in this society, it will be difficult for future translations to be completed without more participants. There exist some groups in Japan who are independently translating from Zhuziyulei, such as Professor Hiroshi Kozen of the Kyoto University, and the Tohoku University's Zhuziyulei Research Society, who have both produced excellent results. Small, independent groups cannot continue their activities even though they are attempting to do so, since their work is not coordinated, and thus creates duplication of effort. Professor Mizoguchi has completed an entire publication with translation and annotation from Zhuziyulei, and has succeeded in integrating some independent groups. He has established the Zhuziyulei Translation and Annotation Society. Similar groups are already beginning their work of translation and annotation. The first publication and translation committee meeting was held at the University of Tokyo in August 2007, and the Zhuziyulei Society was established. This society functions as a loose network with the aim of smoothly providing contact and coordination of scholars and interested groups with the purpose of completing Zhuziyulei translation and annotation.
