天 개념의 이해와 事.物의 합리적 해석

국문 초록

윤휴나 정약용의 天(天命, 上帝) 개념은 단순히 선진시대 天 개념으로의 회귀가 아니라, 이황이 말한 보편적 이치이자 도도히 흐르는 天命으로서의 理의 가치기준을 바탕으로 한 것이다. 또한 天.上帝에 대해 感通[윤휴] 또는 戒懼愼獨[정약용]하는 인간의 관계도 이이가 말한 바와 같은 理氣論的 자연관을 전제로 한 것이었다. 윤휴는 天.上帝를 공경하고 두려워하면서도, 그 天.上帝의 뜻이 性卽理로서 인간에게 내재되어 있음을 근거로 하여 도덕적 본성의 구현을 통해 畏天.事天.樂天의 삶을 지향할 수 있다고 여겼다. 정약용은 性卽理를 부정하였지만, 그 대신 上帝의 뜻이 곧 인간에게 道心으로 내재되어 있음을 근거로 하여 上帝가 부여한 善 지향의 嗜好를 실현하며 살 수 있다고 주장하였다. 윤휴와 정약용에게서 感通 또는 戒愼恐懼의 자세로 공경해야 할 대상으로서의 上帝는 자의적인 의지를 가진 인격신이 아니라 역시 이황, 이이의 경우와 같이 성리학 理氣論을 기반으로 하여 그러한 가치 기준 내에서 그 권능을 행사할 수 있는 존재로 이해된 것이다.

영문 초록

Yun Hyu's or Jeong Yak-yong's idea of Cheon (Heaven), Cheonmyeong (the Mandate of Heaven) or Sangje (the Lord on High) was not just a return to the concept of Heaven in the ancient China, but an achievement on the basis of the value standard of li (理) as the Mandate of Heaven flowing in the universe and the universal principle which Yi Hwang had told about. The relation that human reflects to and communicates with the Heaven (感通; as Yun Hyu said) or is careful-cautious and fearful-anxious about the Heaven (戒愼恐懼; as Jeong Yak-yong insisted) also stood on the premise of the view of nature in the li-gi theory that Yi I had argued. Yun Hyu thought that human could aim for the life fearing, serving, or enjoying the Heaven through realizing the ethical nature on the foundation that the mind of the Heaven or the Lord on High is inherent in human as the ethical nature, even if he respected and awed the Heaven or the Lord on High. Though Jeong Yak-yong denied the theory that human nature is the universal principle, he argued that human could realize the taste oriented to the goodness on the ground of the fact that the Heaven's will is inherent in human as dosim (道心; the Moral Mind). In the case of Yun Hyu or Jeong Yak-yong, the Lord on High as the object that human should reflect to and communicate with or be careful-cautious and fearful-anxious about was not the personified god with the arbitrary will but the existence that could employ his power within the standard of value on the base of the li-gi theory of Neo-Confucianism like the cases of Yi Hwang and Yi I.
