공(空) 개념의 현대적 해석의 문제점 고찰

국문 초록

이 논문은 공(空) 개념에 대한 현대적 해석의 다양성 기원과 문제점 분석을 그 목적으로 하고 있다. 이 글에서 공 개념의 현대적 해석이란 서구 종교와 철학의 관심 하에서 이루어진 새로운 불교 이해방식을 따라 나타난 공 개념 설명을 의미한다. 이 논문이 행하는 분석은 크게 5가지 준거(準據)에 의지하고 있는데, 첫째에서 셋째까지는 턱(Andrew P. Tuck)이 정리한 서구의 공 개념 이해의 3가지 수용방식, 즉 관념주의적 관점을 적용한 해석과 20세기 전반기 논리실증주의자들의 관점을 적용한 해석, 그리고 후기 비트겐슈타인의 관점을 활용한 해석이다. 필자는 여기에 중국의 도가적 관점이 적용된 공 개념 해석과 깔루빠하나(David J. Kalupahana)의 공 개념 이해방식에 대한 필자의 해석을 더하여 5가지로 설정하였다. 이 논문은 이러한 준거들에 의지하여 위와 같은 서구의 불교학에 영향을 받았을 것으로 추정되는 20세기 중후반 동양권 학자들의 공 개념 설명을 분석해 보았다. 분석 결과, 앞서 진행되어 왔던 서구의 3가지 공 개념 해석방식과 도가적 공 개념 해석방식의 영향이 지대한 것으로 나타났다. 특히 그들은 낭만적 관념주의자들의 공 개념 해석방식이 역사적으로 많은 비판을 받았음을 이미 알고 있었고 또한 그들 나름대로 문제점을 지적 비판하지만 결국 그들의 공 개념 설명방식이 관념주의자의 틀에서 크게 벗어나고 있지 못함을 이 분석으로 알 수 있었다. 이 글은 이러한 문제점 발생이 불교의 연기적 세계관에 대한 미진한 이해에서 비롯된 것으로 보고 연기적 세계관이 지니고 있는 철학적 특성 이해를 위해 보다 거시적인 새로운 관점 도입의 필요성과 그것의 가능성을 타진해 보았다.

영문 초록

This paper aims at disclosing why modern Buddhist scholars show their diverse interpretations of the concept of ‘śūnya’. In this paper, modern interpretation of the concept of ‘śūnya’ means a new explanation about‘śūnya’ by modern European religious and philosophical concern. The analysis of their explanation is performed by utilizing five criteria in general. Among these five criteria, the former three sorts are the interpretations influenced by Nineteenth-century idealists, by Early twentieth-century analytic and positivist philosophers, and by post-Wittgensteinians, which are well summarized by Andres P. Tuck. In addition to these three sorts, I added two more sorts, the interpretation influenced by Chinese Taoist perspective and my own interpretation of David J. Kalupahana's understanding of‘śūnya’. This paper analysed some Asian Buddhist scholars' explanation of the concept of ‘śūnya’ in the middle and late twentieth-century that are assumed to be influenced greatly by the above former three sorts of interpretation. This analysis shows us that these scholars cannot escape completely from the frames of understanding ‘śūnya’ rooted in the former three sorts and the Taoist way of interpretation, though they know the limitation of those ways of interpretation. Among these four sorts, the idealistic interpretation has still given a great influence on them, even though they try to criticize it. This paper points out that their insufficient knowledge regarding the theory of‘dependent arising’(‘pratītyasamutpāda’) results in this problem. This paper also suggests the need of more comprehensive perspective on‘pratītyasamutpāda’ and tries to show a possibility of a new outlook on it in order to understand properly the concept of ‘śūnya’.
