고전번역의 현실과 학제간 연계의 필요성

국문 초록

고전번역의 목적은 한마디로 말하면 고전과 현대의 소통일 터이지만 그 소통이란 것이 간단한 통역을 하듯이 쉽게 될 수 있는 것이 아니다. 한문은 이미 영어, 일본어와 같이 많이 쓰이는 외국어보다 오히려 더 낯선 언어가 되어 있다. 한문이 무엇인가 하는 것에 대한 인지도는 매우 낮아서 대다수의 국민들이 한문과 한자를 구분하지 못하고 있다. 이러한 현실에서 한문 원전에 조예가 잎은 학자가 많이 양성되기를 기대하기는 어렵다. 지금까지 한문고전번역을 담당해왔던 역자들을 보면, 서당에서 공부한 초기의 한학자, 그리고 민족문화추진회 부설 국역연수원에서 공부한 사람이 대부분이다. 1년에 고작 몇 명씩 길러지는 민족문화추진회 연수원 상임연구원 출신 역자들의 손에 의해 국역 사업이 진행되어왔다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 2007년 한국고전번역원이 설립된 것은 지금까지 매우 저조했던 한문고전번역의 질과 양을 획기적으로 끌어올려 지금의 현실로는 1차 번역만도 100년이 더 걸릴 기간을 단축시키는데 그 목적이 있다. 그러자면 무엇보다 역자의 수를 늘려야 할 터인데, 한문을 읽을수 있는 역자를 기르는 일이 단기간에 되는 것이 아니고, 아직 한문고전역자에 대한 처우가 그다지 향상되지않은 현실에서 우수한 인재들을 고전번역에 오게 하기도 쉽지 않다. 게다가 번역을 기다리고 있는 한문고전 자료는 다양하여, 지금까지 국가 예산으로 번영해온 사료, 문집류에 그치지 않는다. 이제 한국고전번역원이 출범하면서 고전번역사업을 획기적으로 중대할 수 있는 발판이 마련된 이 시점에서 현실을 점검하고 한문고전번역의 새로운 방향을 모색할 필요가 있다. 고전번역에 종사하는 학자는 文史哲의 기본 지식을 두루 갖추는 게 바람직하지만 대학에서 인문학이 여러 분야로 나뉘어져 있는 현실에서 그러한 학식을 갖출 것을 요구하기는 어렵다. 그런데 번역을 전업하는 역자를 양성하기는 어렵고 번역을 기다리는 서종은 많다. 한편 한문고전의 정리・번역은 젊은 학자들에게 인문학의 바탕을 다지는 데 더 없이 좋은 공부 과정이 될 수 있다. 조사해 본 바에 의하면, 한문을 공부한 사람은 전문역자 외에도 다른 학문분야에 흩어져 있다. 이러한 역자와 다양한 특정분야 전공자들에 대한 정보수집과 숫자 파악을 통해 새로운 사업에 동원할 수 있는 인원을 파악하여 부족한 번역 인력을 보충하고 다양한 특정분야 전공자들과 상호 교류할 수 있는 장을 마련해야 한다. 醫術, 農業, 예술, 종교 등 다양한 전공분야가 포함된 子部書의 서종들을 번역하려면 한문 독해력 외에도 그 분야으 전문지식이 필요하다. 번역서 1200책 가량의 분량으로 추정되는 지부서를 서종에 따라 유관 학계와 연계하여 연구 번역하는 것은 고전번역 사업에 새로운 진로가 될 수 있을 뿐 아니라 한국학 전반의 발전에도 크게 기여할 수 있을것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of translation of Korean classics is to communicate between the past and the present, but the commumication is not very easy. Chinese classics have been more strange to us than English and Japanese. As recognition on what Chinese classics are is very low, most of the people can not differentiate Chinese classics and Chinese characters. In such reality, it is hard to expect that a number of scholars who are good at original Chinese classics are produced. Most of the translators of Chinese classics studied them at local schools or at Korea Training Center for Translation of Chinese Classics. The center produced only a few translators a year and our Korean translation of Chinese classics has depended on them. The Institute for Translation of Korean Classics was established in 2007, with purposes to raicse quality and quantity of the translation exceptionally and reduce a period of 100 years to be taken for the first translation. First of all, we need more translators, but nurturing translators who can read Chinese classics can not be achieved within a short period. It is hard to attract outstanding elites to translating job as no good offer for them has not been provided. In addition, there are enormous data on Chinese classics including historical data and collection of literary works which were translated with national budget. The Institute for Translation of Korean Classics is a base for exceptional expansion of classic translation, on which we should develop new directions for translation of Chinese classics. Scholars engaging in translation of classics should have extensive knowledge on literature, history and philsophy, but as humanities are divided into several areas, it is impossible to obtain human resources with such qualification. It is difficult to nurture full-time translators and a great number of books are waiting for them. Menwhile, organizing and translating Chinese classics are the best ways to build the base to study humanities. According to some research, the persons who studied Chinese classics work for many different areas as well as full-time translating job. So we have to collect information on the full-time translators and the people working for different areas though they studied Chinese classics and identify whether they can be mobilized for new projects. Then we should develop a field for exchanges between them. To translate various kinds of books on medicine, agriculture, art and religion, translators should have specialized knowledge in addition to ability to comprehend Chinese classics. Studying and translating Ｊabuseo consisting of 1200 books through inter-disciplinary connection will provide a new direction to understand Chinese classics and contribute to development of Korean studies
