국문 초록

  이 논문은 기원후 1세기와 5세기 사이에 신라의 국가형성 과정을 설명하는데 있어서 고고학 및 인류학계에서 주요동인들 중의 하나로 간주되는 전쟁이 어떤 역할을 하였는가에 대해서 고찰한 것이다. 신라가 수행한 전쟁에 관한 기사는 삼국사기의 신라본기에 등장하는 기사를 이용하였고 이를 영남지역에서 발굴조사된 분묘에서 출토된 전쟁관련 고고학적 자료, 즉 철제 무기 및 무구와 비교？검토하였다. 특히, 청동 및 철기 유물들을 도구와 무기 두 범주로 나누고 이들을 계량화하여 신라본기에 보이는 전쟁기사와 연계하여 상대 비율과 절대 수 등이 시간이 지남에 따라 어떻게 증감(增減)하는지를 알아보고 이에 대한 해석을 하였다. 신라본기에 보이는 전쟁관련 기사와 전쟁에 사용되었을 철제 무기들에 대한 기술(記述) 통계학적 분석의 결과는 전쟁이 신라의 국가형성 과정에서 지극히 중요한 역할을 하였다는 것을 강하게 시사하고 있는 점을 논의하였다. 특히, 한 정치조직체의 문화변동과 발전을 설명하는데 있어서 이주와 전파의 측면만이 아니고 토착인들의 능동적이고 내재적인 발전에도 주의를 기울여야 한다는 점을 강조하였다.

영문 초록

  This paper presents a case study of how a mono-causative factor, warfare, played a role in the course of the formation of the Silla Kingdom between the first and fifth centuries A.D. The Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa, two of the oldest Korean historical documents are used as the source to acquire a general historical background on the ancient Korean ‘Three Kingdoms.’ The archaeological manifestation of warfare is examined. In particular, a great deal of bronze and iron weapons and implements excavated from the burials excavated in southeastern Korea were quantified and analyzed in conjunction with data on wars mentioned in the historical document of the Samguk Sagi.
  The results of the descriptive statistical analysis on weaponry artifacts that probably were used in battles strongly support the premise that warfare was a critical factor for the state formation process of the Silla Kingdom. It is hoped that this paper will make a contribution to understanding the significance of the warfare hypothesis for the interpretation of the state formation in Korea specifically and in many parts of the world generally.
