재건기의 미술교육과 피바디 사절단의 영향: 1차 자료를 중심으로

국문 초록

오늘날 한국의 문화예술교육은 전 세계적으로 주목받고 있다. 이는 그간 문화예술 분야 전문가들의 노력이 있었기에 가능한 것으로, 특히 1950년대 한국전쟁 후 폐허가 된 상황에서 국제 교육 원조가 미친 영향은 매우 크다. 미술교육 분야에서는 피바디 사절단의 활동에 주목해왔으며 그들이 소개한 창조주의, 경험 중심 교육과정은 오늘날까지 영향을 주고 있다. 그러나 그 영향력에 비해 피바디 사절단에 대한 기록 및 기초 연구 자료가 부족한데, 이런 상황에서 본 연구는 피바디 사절단과 직접 교류했던 교육자 2인의 인터뷰와 당시의 외교문서와 교과서를 고찰하여 생생한 역사적 상황을 고찰하였다. 일제 시대에도 창의성 교육에 대한 언급은 있었지만, 임화중심 수업에서 창조주의, 경험중심 교육과정으로 변화하는 데에는 피바디 사절단의 세미나 및 교사 교육과 당시 교사들의 헌신적인 교과 연구가 있었기에 가능하였음을 확인하였다. 또한 피바디 사절단은 교육 관련 원조 활동뿐만 아니라 유학생 파견 및 미술 작품 교류를 시도하였고 미술 교사에게 미술 재료를 제공하는 등 미술계의 확장에도 영향을 준 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 피바디 사절단이 실시했던 구체적 활동들을 제시하는 역사적 연구로, 그들이 한국 미술 교육에 미친 영향을 재검토할 새로운 자료를 제공한다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

Korea's cultural and arts education is gaining global attention. This is made possible through the efforts of experts in the field of cultural and arts education over the years, especially after the Korean War in the 1950s when the country was left in ruins, and international educational aid played a significant role. In the field of art education, the activities of the Peabody Mission have been highlighted, and their introduction of creative, experiential-centered curricula continues to have an impact to this day. However, despite their influence, there is a lack of records and foundational research materials about them. In such a situation, this study examines the historical context by conducting interviews with two educators who had direct interactions with the Peabody Mission and analyzing documents from that time, including diplomatic documents and textbooks. It was confirmed that although there were mentions of creative education during the Japanese colonial era, the transformation from a rote learning-centered curriculum to a creative, experiential-centered one was made possible due to the Peabody Mission's seminars and teacher training, as well as the dedicated curriculum research by teachers at that time. Furthermore, the Peabody Mission not only engaged in educational aid activities but also attempted to send exchange students and facilitate art exchanges. They provided art materials to art teachers, contributing to the expansion of the art community. This study serves as a historical research that presents the specific activities carried out by the Peabody Mission, and it holds significance in providing new information to reevaluate their impact on South Korean art education
