국문 초록

깨진 창 이론에 따르면, 지역사회 내 물리적·사회적 무질서가 방치되면 주민들이 느끼는 범죄 두려움이 증가하고, 이는 지역 공동체의 사회적 통제력과 유대감을 약화시키는 결과로 이어질 수 있다. 지역사회 무질서는 공동체의 사회적 유대와 안전인식에 중요한 영향을 미치는 요인으로, 특히 물리적 및 사회적 무질서가 주민들의 집합효율성에 유의미한 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 점에 서 주목받아왔다. 이 연구는 깨진 창 이론을 바탕으로 도서산간 및 농어촌 지역에서 지역사회 무질서가 집합효율성에 미치는 영 향을 검증하는 과정에서 범죄두려움의 매개효과를 함께 분석하였다. 연구자료는 2020년에 실시된 ‘도서산간지역 치안 환경 실 태조사’의 설문 데이터를 사용하였으며, 주요 변수로는 집합효율성, 물리적 무질서, 사회적 무질서, 그리고 범죄두려움이 포함되 었다. 구조방정식 모형의 분석 결과, 물리적 무질서와 사회적 무질서는 범죄두려움을 통해 집합효율성에 유의미한 영향을 미치 며, 두 가지 유형의 무질서는 모두 집합효율성과 범죄두려움에 유의미한 직·간접적 효과를 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 범죄 두려움이 매개변수로서 집합효율성에 미치는 간접효과는 통계적으로 유의하지 않아 직접효과가 보다 중요하다는 결과가 도출되 었다. 이 연구의 결과는 한국의 도서산간 및 농어촌 지역의 범죄 예방 및 사회적 통합을 위한 정책적 시사점을 제공하며, 후속 연구에서 보다 다양한 환경적 요인에 따른 집합효율성의 변화와 영향에 대한 심층적 분석의 필요성을 제안하였다.

영문 초록

This study empirically analyzes the effects of community disorder on collective efficacy in rural and island regions through the mediating effect of fear of crime, based on the Broken Windows Theory. According to this theory, unaddressed physical and social disorder within communities may heighten residents' fear of crime and safety concerns, leading to a weakening of social control and cohesion among community members. Community disorder significantly impacts social bonds and the safety of communities, with physical and social disorder potentially influencing collective efficacy among residents. The study utilized survey data from the “2020 Rural and Island Region Crime Environment Survey,” focusing on key variables, including collective efficacy, physical disorder, social disorder, and fear of crime. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis revealed that physical and social disorder significantly impacted collective efficacy both directly and indirectly through fear of crime. However, the mediating effect of fear of crime on collective efficacy was statistically insignificant, suggesting that the direct effects hold greater importance. Notably, physical and social disorder exhibited contrasting effects on collective efficacy, influenced by the unique environmental factors characteristic of rural and island regions. The findings provide insights for crime prevention and social cohesion policies specific to these regions and underscore the need for further in-depth analysis of collective efficacy across diverse environmental contexts.
