국문 초록

「라이프 오브 파이」는 난파와 식인이라는 극적인 소재와 상상력을 자극하는 탄탄한 구성으로 문학성을 인정받은 원전 소설을 최첨단 3D로 영상화한 작품이다. 영화는 다양한 해석이 공존하지만, 본 연구에서는 난파와 표류라는 극한 상황에서의 생존서사와, 주인공 파이가 겪는 심리적 불안과 절망이라는 정신세계에 주목하고자 한다. 불완전하고 유한한 존재인 파이와 호랑이 리처드 파커에게 투사되는 야수성과 인간성, 절망과 희망, 신과 구원의 문제는 결국 인간 본성에 대한 탐구로 귀결된다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 본 연구는 프로이트의 정신분석학적 접근방법을 통해 삶과 죽음의 경계에 선 파이의 두 가지 이야기를 인간 존재에 대한 탐구라는 측면에서 분석하고자 한다.

영문 초록

‘Life of Pi’ is a state-of-the-art 3D film adaptation of the original novel, which was recognized for its literary value for its dramatic subject matter of shipwreck and cannibalism and a solid structure that stimulates the imagination. Although there are various interpretations of the film, this study focuses on the narrative of survival in extreme situations such as shipwreck and drifting, and the mental world of psychological anxiety and despair experienced by the main character, Pi. The issues of animality and humanity, despair and hope, and God and salvation projected onto Pi and the tiger Richard Parker, who are imperfect and finite beings, ultimately result in an exploration of human nature. Based on this understanding, this study seeks to analyze the two stories of Pi, who stands on the border between life and death, from the perspective of exploration into human existence through Freud's psychoanalytical approach.
