국문 초록

『공장의 불빛』은 1980년대에 출간된 여성 노동자 수기의 대표적인 사례이다. 이전까지 재현의 대상으로만 존재해왔던 여성 노동자가 스스로 자신을 재현한 글쓰기 실천으로서 『공장의 불빛』의 의미는 중요하게 평가되어왔다. 한 개인의 목소리를 담는 데 그치지 않고 여성 노동자들의 집단적인 목소리를 담고 있다는 점에서 그 의의는 더욱 크다고 여겨진다. 그러나 본고는 『공장의 불빛』을 여성 노동자들의 집단적인 글쓰기 실천으로 곧장 의미화하는 방식과 거리를 두고 그 같은 해석을 해체해보고자 하였다. 이는 주어진 발화의 조건과 갈등하고 그에 타협하며 수행된 여성 노동자들의 실천과 이들 내부의 긴장 및 시각의 차이를 건너뛰거나 축소함으로써 그간의 논의에서 그 실천의 해방성이 원론적인 차원으로 수렴된 경향이 있다는 문제의식에 따른 것이다. 본고는 특히 『공장의 불빛』에서 여성 노동자들이 투쟁의 주체성 및 자기 언어의 문제에 관하여 고민하며 갈등하였던 장면과 행간에 주목해보고자 하였다. 물론 노동자의 자기 재현 자체가 하나의 전복이자 전위로서 지니는 의미를 과소평가해서는 안 될 것이다. 그러나 바로 그렇기 때문에 여성 노동자들이 주체성의 문제를 고민하며 갈등하였던 지점들은 중요하게 다루어져야 한다. 『공장의 불빛』은 여성 노동자들이 자기 재현의 주체로 등장하며 목소리를 내는 바로 그 사건에서부터 오히려 자기 언어와 주체성의 문제가 이들에게서 첨예하게 대면되고 있었음을 보여준다. 이는 언어의 획득을 통한 전복과 전위가 실천되는 순간에조차 구조적으로 작동하고 있는 현실적인 권력의 문제를 적시한 것이자, 그 같은 권력의 배치 안에서 서발턴은 과연 어떻게 자기 재현의 주체가 될 수 있는지에 대한 근본적인 물음에 다름 아니었다. 이 같은 문제에 주목함으로써 본고는 여성 노동자의 글쓰기 실천이 지니는 의미와 그것의 급진성을 재론해보고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Kongjang-ui Pulbitt (Factory Lights), published in 1984, is one of the most important works of female working-class autobiographies in South Korea. Before this, female proletariats had existed merely as objects to be represented when Factory Lights marked a turning point in that it showed these women brandishing their pens to shape their own representation. Factory Lights also derives its importance from the fact that it does not confine itself to contain only the voice of a particular individual but the voices of an entire collective. However, this paper seeks to distance itself from reading Factory Lights as a product of a group of female proletariats, and in fact aims to deconstruct such a point of view. It argues that previous discourse has not delved beyond viewing the act of proletarian women writing itself as liberation and shows that such a standpoint can contribute to the minimization of the tensions and the differences in perspectives between the female workers that arose from resisting and fighting against their oppressive conditions. This paper is especially concerned with how the female workers in Factory Lights discoursed on and questioned the subjectivity of the struggle and the problems of language. While it is essential to acknowledge the meaning and significance of subalterns representing themselves and how this act of representation can become an act of subversion and transgression, it is also for this very reason that we must focus on how the female workers in Factory Lights discussed the problem of their subjectivity. This autobiographical text is the evidence that female proletarians confronted the problems of their language and subjectivity from the moment they undertook the task of shaping their own subjectivity and representation. Even as they were using language to be subversive and transgressive, they were also asking whether subalterns could accurately represent themselves in a society wrought with such oppressive power structures. This paper aims focus on this problem and discuss the radicalness that female proletarians’ writings contained on that point.
