이광수의 문학적 계보에서 먼저 떠올릴 만한 작가로는 선우휘가 있다. 서북 출신의 작가들이 대개 그렇듯이, 누구 못지않게 이광수로부터 깊은 감화를 받은 선우휘는 심지어 정주 태생이다. 이러한 영향 관계의 일단은 널리 알려진 대로 ｢묵시(默示)｣(1971)에 잘 드러나 있다. 이 소설의 화자가 이광수의 변절과 결국 화해/불화했는가에 답하기 위해서는 스승이 들려준 서낭의 이야기를 빼놓을 수 없으며, 어떤 의미에서는 서낭의 이야기를 경유함으로써만 비로소 작가의 의도에 다다를 수 있다. 이 소설은 이광수가 침묵을 선택했다면 일어났을 법한 일들을 재현함으로써, 그의 협력이 진정성이나 도덕적 정결성에 있어서는 비난을 불허할 뿐만 아니라 실은 비범한 선택이었음을 보여주는 서사적 패턴을 예시한다. 그러한 자기 합리화의 서사적 기제는 이광수 소설에 특유한 문법이면서, 동시에 1960년대 중반 이후 선우휘 소설에서 집중적으로 나타나는 이광수 표상의 핵심이기도 하다.

영문 초록

In the literary genealogy of Lee Kwang-soo, the first writer that comes to mind is Seonwoo hui. Like most writers from the northwest, Seonwoo hui, who was deeply influenced by Lee Kwang-soo as much as anyone else, was even born in Jeongju. One of these influence relationships is well-known in Apocalypse (1971), as it is widely known. In order to answer whether the narrator of this novel is Lee Kwang-soo’s betrayal and eventually reconciliation/discord, the story of Seo Nang told by his teacher is essential, and in a sense, the author’s intention can be reached only through the story of Seo Nang. By recreating what would have happened if Lee Kwang-soo had chosen silence, this novel exemplifies a narrative pattern that shows that his cooperation was not only undeniable in terms of authenticity and moral integrity, but was actually an extraordinary choice. The narrative mechanism of such self-rationalization is the grammar unique to Lee Kwang-soo’s novels, and at the same time, it is the core of Lee Kwang-soo’s representation that has been concentrated in Seonwoo hui’s novels since the mid-1960s.
