국문 초록

본 연구는 1960년대 이래로 남한문학장의 ‘외부’에서 한국문학의 영어번역을 주도적으로 이끌며 ‘남한문학번역장’의 구성원들에게 지속적인 활동 공간을 제공해왔던 Korea Journal의 번역실천 양상을 분석하였다. Korea Journal은 한국문학의 해외소개를 목적으로 1965년에 설립되었던 <한국문학번역협회>를 대신하여 민간번역기구로서 활동하였다. 1965년부터 1999년까지 30여 년 동안 210여 편의 단편소설을 수록함으로써, Korea Journal은 한국문학의 번역실천을 위한 안정적인 번역공간을 제공해왔다. Korea Journal에서 활동했던 번역가들은 작품 선정에 있어 상대적 자율성을 지니고 있었기 때문에 다양한 한국중단편 소설들이 번역될 수 있었다. 1970~80년대 문예진흥원이 추진했던 문학번역 지원사업이 대체로 Korea Journal을 통해서 구축되었던 번역가 네트워크를 기반으로 전개되었던 까닭에 한국문학의 번역프로젝트는 민관의 협력 하에 상호보완적으로 진행될 수 있었다. 그러나 1990년대에 이르러 다양한 민간번역기구들이 경쟁적으로 활동하게 되면서 남한문학번역장에 구조변동이 일어난다. 그 결과 유네스코 한국위원회는 한국문학의 번역프로젝트를 중단하고, Korea Journal은 한국학 전문 학술지로서 거듭난다. Korea Journal은 남한문학번역장에서 활동하던 번역가들에게 번역 공생의 공간을 제공함으로써, 1960~80년대 남한문학번역장의 ‘구심적’ 역할을 수행했던 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper examined the translation practice of Korea Journal, a monthly English magazine of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, which translated Korean literature into English from outside of the field of Korean literature since the 1960s. Instead of the Korean Literary Translation Association(Han’gungmunhakpŏnyŏkhyŏphoe), established in 1965 to introduce Korean literature abroad, Korea Journal functioned as a private organization for translation. This Journal provided a stable translation space to both inbound and outbound translators of Korean Literature, by publishing 219 short stories over 30 years from January 1965 to 1999. Translators who contributed translated texts to Korea Journal had relative autonomy in selecting works, so various Korean short stories could be published. Since the translation projects promoted by the Korean Culture and Arts Foundation(Munyejinhŭngwŏn) during the 1970s and 1980s were generally based on the translator network established in Korean Journal, these projects could be carried out complementarily with the cooperation of the public and private sectors. Various organizations for translating Korean literature in the 1990s, however, resulted in structural changes in the field of Korean literary translation. As a result, the Korean National Commission for UNESCO decided to suspend the Korean literature translation project, and Korea Journal was finally reborn as a academic journal specializing in Korean studies. By providing a symbiotic space for translators of Korean Literature, Korea Journal played a pivotal role in the field of Korean literary translation in South Korea during the 1960s and 1980s.
