개화기 한국 근대 도서관의 형성과정에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

이 연구는 우리나라 근대 도서관의 형성과정을 밝히기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 개화기 서구 문명 수용 과정에서 근대 도서관 설립에 영향을 미친 인물들을 세 그룹으로 나누어 상호 관계성을 고찰하고자 했다. 그룹별로 첫째, 조선 시대 실질적으로 마지막 왕권을 행사한 고종과, 고종이 신뢰하는 외국인 고문관 및 고빙된 인물들의 역할을 조사했다. 둘째, 당대 정부의 외교 사절로서 선진 문물 시찰 과정에서 도서관의 존재를 일찍이 경험한 인사들과 유학생들이 미친 영향을 파악했다. 셋째, 당시 고종을 비롯한 조정과 개화파 활동에 영향을 미친 선교사들의 교육활동과 도서관 분야의 지원 활동 사례를 찾아냈다. 이상의 조사를 바탕으로 각 분야 여러 인물의 연계 활동들이 근대 도서관의 형성과정과 어떠한 관계가 있었는가를 밝혀내고, 근대 최초의 도서관 형성에 관한 담론을 정리하고자 했다. 그 결과, 첫째, 고종은 조일수호조규 이후 수신사, 영선사, 보빙사 등 해외 파견 인사와 박문국을 통해 개화 관련 서적을 입수해 활용했고, 그가 임명한 외국인 고문관과 고빙된 기술자들은 궁궐에 서양식 도서관을 건축하는데 기여했다. 둘째, 개화파 상당수는 일본과 미국, 유럽, 러시아 등 선진 도서관을 직접 시찰하거나 견학한 인물들로서 그 경험을 국정에 반영하여 출판·인쇄기관과 학교 및 도서관을 설립하는 데 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 외국 선교 기관과 선교사들은 고종과 개화파 두 그룹 모두에 영향을 미치면서 학교와 도서관을 설립하는데 기여했다. 끝으로 1898년 인천에 설립된 박문협회 도서관과 1905년 평양에 설립된 야소교서원은 우리나라에 설립된 최초의 근대 공공도서관에 관한 담론에 새로운 전기를 마련할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the formation process of the modern library in Korea. To this end, this study tried to find out the correlation by dividing people who influenced the establishment of modern library during the process of accepting Western Civilization in enlightening period into three groups. The first group investigated the Emperor Gojong, the last royal power during the Josun Dynasty, and the roles of foreign advisors and hired people who had a confidential relationship with the King. The second group investigated the influence, affected by the foreign students and diplomatic delegations who experienced the existence of libraries early in the process of inspecting advanced culture. The third group ferret out the examples of educational activities and library supporting activities by the King and missionaries those who influenced Reform Party. Based on the above investigation, this study tried to find out the relationship between the performance of various people in each field and the formation process of the modern library and to organize the discourse on the formation of the first modern library in Korea. As a result, first, after the Japan-Korea treaty, King Gojong obtained and utilized books related to enlightening, acquired by Parkmoonguk and diplomatic delegations such as Sushinsa, Yeongseonsa, and Bobingsa. Furthermore, the foreign advisors and skilled engineers appointed by the King contributed to the construction of a Western-style library. Second, many member of Reform Party were the people who directly inspected or toured advanced libraries in Japan, the United States, Europe and Russia and they reflected their experiences into state affairs to establish publication & printing office, schools and libraries. Third, foreign mission agencies and missionaries contributed to establishing schools and libraries by having an effect on the King and Reform Party. Lastly, the Bakmun Association library established in Incheon, Korea in 1898 and the Yasogyo-Seowon established in Pyongyang, Korea in 1905, will be a new turing point on the discourse of the first modern public library in Korea.
