손창섭의 4·19와 5·16

국문 초록

이 글은 1959-1961년 사이에 발표된 손창섭 장편소설 ｢세월이 가면｣, ｢저마다 가슴 속에｣, ｢내 이름은 여자｣를 대상으로 하여, 4·19와 5·16을 경유하며 나타난 손창섭 소설의 변모 양상을 살펴보았다. 이 세 편의 소설은 ‘누가 누구와 결혼할 것인가?’라는 문제를 중심으로 하는 유사한 플롯을 가지고 있으면서도, 연재기간 전후에 일어난 4·19 및 5·16과의 관계에 의해 이러한 구조적 요소들의 조합과 배열 방식이 달라진다. 따라서 이 글은 세 편의 소설의 플롯 구조를 도식화하여 비교하고, 동시에 작품 속에서 4·19와 관련한 기호가 삽입되거나 삭제되는 양상을 살펴봄으로써 세 편의 소설의 구조에서 도출할 수 있는 손창섭 소설의 정치적 무의식을 검토하였다. 이때 4·19 이전에 창작된 ｢세월은 가면｣이 새로운 정치적, 사회적 연대의 가능성을 탐색하면서도 끝내 이를 설득력있는 결말의 제시로 이끌어가지 못한 것과 달리, 4·19 이후에 쓰인 ｢저마다 가슴 속에｣는 4·19 전후의 정치적 기호들을 활용함으로써 4·19의 정치적 전선 위에 하위주체와 신세대 엘리트들의 연대를 배치하는 플롯을 형성할 수 있었다. 한편 ｢내 이름은 여자｣에서 연재 도중 일어난 5·16은 소설의 플롯이 가진 결함에 자신의 흔적을 남기며, 배반의 감각과 결별의 사건들을 통해 정치적 · 사회적 연대의 가능성을 해소시키며, 손창섭 소설의 내용과 형식을 이전의 것으로 회귀시킨다. 결국 이 시기 손창섭 소설에서 4·19에 의해 나타난 새로운 정치적 연대에 대한 기대는 5·16에 의해 배반되는데, 이러한 기대-배반의 구조는 이전의 손창섭 소설의 기저에 놓여 있었던, 국민국가에 대한 기대와 그 배반이라는 하위주체의 역사적 경험이 다른 방식으로 반복되는 것이기도 하다. 이러한 경험은 4·19를 통해 제기되었던 하위주체의 정치적 요구가 잊혀지는 과정과 대응된다. 따라서 이러한 경험은 5·16 이후 새롭게 마주친 가부장적 국민국가에 대한 하위주체의 서사로서의 손창섭 소설의 새로운 응전 방식을 배태한다.

영문 초록

This article aims to examine the changes in Son Chang-seop’s novels through 4·19 and 5·16, targeting Son Chang-seop’s long novels “As time goes by”, “In each heart”, and “My name is a woman” written between 1959 and 1961. These 3 novels have a similar plot centered on the question of 'who will marry whom?' However, due to the relationship with 4·19 and 5·16, the combination and arrangement of structural elements are different. In this article, the plot structure of these novels was schematized and compared, and at the same time, the aspects of signs related to 4·19 were inserted or deleted. And this article derived the political unconsciousness of these novels through this. “As time goes by”, written before 4·19 explored the possibility of a new political and social solidarity, but failed to lead it to a convincing ending. Contrary, “In Each Heart”, written after 4.19, was able to form a plot that placed the solidarity between the new generation elites and subalterns on the political front of 4.19 by utilizing political signs about 4.19. On the other hand, 5·16 that occurred during serialization in ｢My Name is Woman｣ left its mark on the flaws of the plot of the novel. It resolved the possibility of political and social solidarity through the sense of betrayal and separation events, and also returned Son Chang-seop’s novel to the previous ones. In the end, the expectation of a new political solidarity shown by 4·19 in Son Chang-seop’s novels of this period was betrayed by 5·16. This structure of expectation-betrayal was also a repetition of the historical experience of the subaltern’s expectations for the nation-state and its betrayal, which was at the base of previous Son Chang-seop novels, in a different way. This experience corresponds to the process in which the political demands of subaltern raised through 4·19 are forgotten. Therefore, this experience gave birth to a new way of responding to the patriarchal nation-state newly encountered after 5·16, in Son Chang-seop’s novels as a narrative of a sub-subject.
