1920년대 경성도서관의 강연회와 조선의 문화운동

국문 초록

이 논문은 경성도서관에서 개최된 강연회와 같은 문화 행사의 내용과 의미를 1920년대 문화운동의 맥락에서 고찰하는 데 목적을 둔다. 1921년 이범승이 설립한 경성도서관은 ‘조선여자청년회’와 ‘현대소년구락부’와 같은 단체의 활동 근거지가 되었다. 조선여자청년회의 ‘부인강좌’, 현대소년구락부의 ‘동화회(童話會)’, ‘취미강좌’는 경성도서관 아동도서실에서 무료로 열렸으며 청중을 여성과 어린이로 한정하였다. 이 행사들에는 통역, 그림, 실험, 음악 등이 도입되어 지식 습득의 진입 장벽을 낮추는 결과를 낳았다. 경성도서관 강연회의 주제는 민족성, 과학성, 평등성, 종교성 등 실로 다양한 가치들의 혼재를 보여주면서도 조선 여성과 아동을 위한 사회교육활동에 집중되었다. 경성도서관의 강연회는 1920년대 총독부의 사회교화정책과 접속할 위험을 내포하고 있었으나, 경성부립도서관에서 개최된 관제적 성격의 강연회와 비교하면 분명히 차별점을 지닌다. 경성부립도서관의 강연회는 조선사회사업연구회와 경성도서관연구회 같은 관변단체나 조선총독부에서 주최했다. 청중을 학회 회원으로 한정하는 경향이 있었으며 통속강연은 일반 청중에게 열려 있었으나 일본어로 진행했다. 주제도 사회개조와 일본 종교 등 전문적인 지식을 기반에 두고 있었다. 경성부립도서관과 비교해 볼 때 경성도서관의 강연회는 공공성에서 배제된 존재, 즉 성별이나 연령 제한, 시간과 금전의 부족 등으로 도서관이라는 열린 공간을 향유하지 못했던 존재를 가시화하고 그들에게 배움의 기회를 제공했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to consider the contents and the meaning of the cultural events like lecture meetings held in Gyeongseong Library in the context of cultural movement in the 1920s. Gyeongseong Library, which was established in 1921 by Lee Beomseung, became a base of activity of groups like ‘Joseon Young Women’s Association’ and ‘Modern Boy’s Club’. The ‘women lecture’ of Joseon Young Women’s Association and the ‘children’s story meeting’ and the ‘hobby lectures’ of Modern Boy’s Club had been held free of charge in the children’s room in Gyeongseong Library and only women and children could participate in the events. For the events, translation, pictures, experiments, music, etc. were used to lower the barrier to entry to knowledge acquisition. The topics of the lectures held in Gyeongseong Library were focused on the social education for women and children in Joseon while containing diversectured characteristic values like ethnicity, science, equality, religion. The lectures held in Gyeongseong Library are distinctly distinguished with the lectures having government-manufactured characteristics held in Gyeongseong Prefectural Library although the events had a risk of being connected with the social enlightenment policy of the Japanese Government General of Korea in the 1920s. The lectures of Gyeongseong Prefectural Library were mostly hosted by government friendly organizations like Joseon Social Work Research Society and Gyeongseong Library Research Society or the Japanese Government General of Korea. The audience of the lectures tended to be restricted to academic society members and public lectures opened to general audiences were progressed in Japanese language. The topics of the lectures were also based on expertise like social reforms and Japanese religion. Contrast with the lectures of Gyeongseong Prefectural Library, the lectures held in Gyeongseong Library have a meaning in the point that those exposed human beings who had been excluded from publicness, i.e. people who had not experienced public space like library because of the limitation about gender and age, shortage of time and money, etc. and had provided the chance of learning.
