국문 초록

명대 소설 《西遊記》에는 개성 넘치는 다채로운 요괴 캐릭터가 다수 등장한다. 이들은 ‘부정적 가치를 지니는 초자연적인 존재’라는 전통적인 요괴 캐릭터의 개념을 벗어나 새로운 의의를 가지는 요괴 캐릭터로 탄생되었다. 《서유기》의 요괴는 선과 악의 구분에 따라 이원 대립적으로 분별할 수 없다. 그들은 절대적 개념의 ‘악인’으로 그려진 평면적 인물이 아니라 언제든지 神佛이 될 수 있는 입체적인 인물형으로 그려져 있다. 《서유기》의 많은 요괴 캐릭터 중에서 우마왕 요괴는 손오공이 西天取經을 시작하기 전부터 등장하여 取經 이후에도 지속적으로 작품에서 그 이름이 언급된다. 또한 우마왕을 둘러싼 인물들은 손오공 일행의 고난에 누차 영향을 미친다. 한 번의 에피소드로 고난이 종결되는 다른 요괴들과는 다르게 우마왕 및 관련 요괴들은 지속적이고 유기적으로 영향을 준다는 점에서 작품에서 차지하는 비중이 남다르다. 우마왕 요괴 캐릭터의 모티프는 인간에게 친숙한 가축인 ‘소’이다. 소는 불교에서 ‘마음’을 상징하는 소재로 자주 활용되었다. 廓庵의 十牛圖 및 《법화경》 大白牛車의 ‘소’ 형상과 우마왕 요괴 캐릭터를 비교하여 불교적 상징의의를 고찰해보았다. 또 우마왕과 주변인물의 관계 분석을 통해, 우마왕이 어떻게 그들과 상호작용하고 있으며 이들의 관계가 西游 고난에서 어떠한 의의를 차지하는지 분석하였다. 마지막으로 우마왕과 손오공의 변신술을 비교 분석하여 불교문화적 해석을 시도하였다.

영문 초록

The novel from the Ming Dynasty, 《Journey to the West》 features a number of unique and colorful monster characters. They were born as monster characters with new significance, breaking away from the traditional monster character of “supernatural beings with negative values.” Among the many monster characters in the 《Journey to the West》, the Bull Monster King appeared even before Son Wukong began his journey, and its name is constantly mentioned in the work even after journey. In addition, the characters surrounding the Bull Monster King have repeatedly influenced the hardships of the Son Wukong and his party. Unlike other monsters whose hardships end in a single face-in a single encounter, the Bull Monster King and monsters related to him have a substantial proportion in the work in that they have a lasting and organic influence. The motif of the character of Bull Monster King is “bull,” a livestock familiar to humans. Bull was often used as a symbol of the 'heart' in Buddhism. The Buddhist symbolic significance was examined by comparing the shape of the cow in the Kao-an’s Drawings of the Ten Bulls and the character of Bull Monster King. In addition, through the analysis of the relationship between Bull Monster King and the surrounding monster, it was analyzed how Bull Monster King interacts with them and what significance their relationship holds in the hardships of the Journey. Finally, Buddhist cultural interpretation was attempted by comparing and analyzing the transformation techniques of Bull Monster King and Son Wukong.
