국문 초록

《차가운 밤(寒夜)》는 1947년에 출간된 바진(巴金)의 마지막 장편소설이다. 본 소설은 중일전쟁 시기 충칭(重慶)을 배경으로 하여 왕원쉬안(汪文宣)과 그의 아내 쩡수성(曾樹生), 그리고 어머니를 중심으로 전개되며, 이 인물들의 끊임없는 갈등이 주된 플롯으로 설정되어 있다. 일반적으로 본 소설은 ‘겨울’과 ‘밤’의 이미지, 그리고 인물들의 갈등과 비극적 결말에 주목하여 중일전쟁 시기 바진이 느낀 절망감의 표현으로 독해된다. 그러나 바진의 회고에 따르면 이 작품의 핵심은 ‘비극성’이 아닌, 전쟁이라는 냉혹한 환경과 질병으로 인해 비극적인 종말을 맞이하는 인물들을 넘어선 ‘희망’에 있다. 이러한 관점에서 보면 《차가운 밤》이라는 작품은 그 초점을 ‘전쟁으로 인한 비극’에 맞추기보다는 ‘인간 실존에 관한 물음’에 맞추는 것이 더 정확할 것이다. 작품이 제기하는 이러한 물음들은 인간의 주체는 타자와의 관계 속에서 발생한다는 사르트르(Sartre)의 고찰과의 연계 속에서 이해할 수 있다. 사르트르는 “주체가 타자와 내적 관계를 가지며, 주체의 내면성이 타자를 경유해서만 가능하다는 사실”을 지적한다. 동시에 “인간에게 있어서는 실존이 본질을 선행한다”라고 말하며 “한 인간의 운명은 외부의 힘에 의해서 결정될 수 없”고, “한 인간의 운명이란 그가 스스로 결정하고 선택해서 살아간 결과에 불과하다”고 밝힌다. 이에 본고는 사르트르가 제시한 타인과의 연계 속에서, 특히 타인의 ‘응시’를 통해 형성되는 자기 주체성과 ‘사랑’이라는 타자와의 관계성에 주목하여 바진의 《차가운 밤》을 분석해 본다.

영문 초록

Cold Nights is the last novel by Ba Jin published in 1947. This novel is set in Chongqing during the Sino-Japanese War, and revolves around Wang Wenxuan, his wife Zeng Shusheng, and Wang’s mother, and the constant conflict between these characters is set as the main plot. In general, the novel is read as an expression of despair felt by Ba Jin during the Sino-Japanese War, especially through the images of “winter” and “night,” and the conflict and tragic ending of the characters. However, according to Ba Jin, the core of this novel is not “tragedy,” but “hope” beyond the harsh environment of war and the tragedies of the characters. From this point of view, it would be more accurate to focus on the “question of human existence” rather than on the “tragedy caused by war.” These questions raised by the work can be understood in connection with Sartre’s consideration that human subjects arise in relationships with others. Sartre points out that “the subject has an internal relationship with the other, and the subject’s inner nature is only possible through the other.” At the same time, he said, “For humans, existence precedes the essence,” adding, “One man’s fate cannot be determined by external forces,” and “One man’s fate is only the result of his own decision and choice.” Therefore, in the light of the relationship between the others suggested by Satre, this paper analyzes the Ba Jin Cold Nights by placing the focus on the self-subjective formed by ‘gaze’ of the others, and the relationship of others called ‘love’.
