동아시아 SF X BL 서사의 트랜스-휴머니즘적 상상력과 젠더·섹슈얼리티 실험

국문 초록

본 연구는 BL문화의 대중화를 한·중·일을 포함한 동아시아에서 동시대적으로 발생하고 있는 서브컬처 트렌드, 일종의 트랜스-동아시아적인 문화 현상으로 파악하고 그 다양한 양상과 의미를 파악하려는 시도의 일환이다. BL 문화가 대중화되고 음지의 서브컬처에서 양지로 점차 자신의 활동 영역을 넓힘에 따라, BL은 내용적 장르적 측면, 대중과의 접촉면, 산업생태계 측면 등 다방면으로 그 외연을 빠르게 확장하고 있다. 본 연구는 BL이 확장되고 있는 여러 면모들 중에 특히 ‘BL + X(혹은 X + BL)’의 양상, 즉 BL과 다른 장르적 요소의 결합을 통한 장르 확장이라는 측면에 초점을 맞추었다. 특히 4차 산업혁명의 거대한 조류와 맞물려 이전과는 또 다른 생명력을 얻고 있는 SF 장르와 BL의 결합을 주목했다. 최근 SF와 BL 두 장르의 결합은 대단히 활발하게 일어나고 있다. 본문은 SF와 BL이 적극적으로 결합하는 것은 이 결합이 상보적 시너지를 극대화할 수 있는 가능성을 가지고 있기 때문인 것으로 파악한다. 즉 SF와 BL의 결합은 두 장르 본연의 전복적 사고의 경계를 한계까지 밀어붙이며 인간과 인간을 둘러싼 세계에 대한 새로운 상상을 가능하게 한다.

영문 초록

This study is part of an attempt to grasp the popularization of BL (Boys’ Love) culture as a subculture trend, a kind of Trans-East Asian cultural phenomenon. Along with the changes in the contexts surrounding BL culture, BL culture moves its ground from exclusive enthusiast fandom community to more open and public popular culture market. With increasing popularity, BL is rapidly expanding its boundary and influence in terms of contents, genre, channel, and related industrial ecosystem. Among various aspect of genre expansion of BL, this study focuses on the ‘BL + X (or X + BL)’, the combination of BL with other genre elements. This study gives close attention to the combination of BL and SF. SF is gaining a whole new vitality and strength in line with the rise of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Recently, it is recognizable that the combination of these two genres has been frequent and vigorous. The vigorous combination of SF and BL seems to be due to the possibility of maximizing complementary synergy. In order to embrace BL, SF is dismantling the existing way of existence of ‘human’ and more boldly developing trans-humanistic imagination about the ‘not real but possible’ way of ‘human’ existence. Meanwhile, BL is more aggressively practicing the experiments about gender and sexuality in the world SF make possible, in which it is free from various existing norms (especially the gender norms). Erotic coupling between male figures (boys or men), the most essential element of BL culture, is bound to face various ethical challenges in real world. To avoid or neutralize these ethical challenges, BL combines with SF. This is because it enables the expansion of the ‘playground’ itself or the setting of a completely new version of it. In other words, the combination of SF and BL pushes the boundaries of subversive thinking inherent to the two genres to the very limit and enables a new imagination of humans and the world surrounding.
