비움과 열림의 마당 미학 연구

국문 초록

한국전통문화와 한국미에 대한 탐구는 회화나 건축 등의 오브제 중심으로 이루어져왔고, 한국의 미는 자연친화성과 담백함 등으로 서술되어져 왔다. 본고는 여백에 가까운 한국 전통 마당에 그러한 한국 전통 미학이 특히 잘 드러난다고 보고, 마당의 고유한 성격을 ‘비움’과 ‘열림’의 관점에서 조명하였다. 기존의 마당 연구는 한옥의 일부로 다루어진 경우가 많았고, 이론적 배경으로 노자(老子)의 무(無)와 허(虛)를 특정 비유와 함께 주로 인용하는 경우가 많았다. 본고에서는 무(無)와 허(虛) 두 어휘의 철학적 의미와 관계를 노자 텍스트 독해를 통해 좀 더 깊이 알아보고, 그 의미를 마당의 비움과 열림의 연장선에서 고찰해봄으로써 마당의 정신문화적 측면을 조명하였다. 연구방법은 문헌연구와 현장답사를 병행하였다. 대상지는 안동 병산서원과 경주 최부자집이다. 연구 결과, 노자의 무(無)와 마당의 비움이 만나는 지점은 무위(無爲)의 정원과 마당의 범용성으로 파악되었다. 마당의 열림은 자연과 공동체 두 방향을 향하는데, 노자의 허(虛)와 만나는 지점은 각각 차경(借景)과 나눔으로 파악이 되었다. 이 연구의 의의는 도시화로 인해 현대 한국 사회에서 점차 사라져 가고 있는 한국 전통 마당의 미학적 측면을 드러냄으로써 마당의 가치 및 한국인에 내재한 문화적 감각에 대한 이해를 돕는 것이다. 기대 효과는 현대 도시의 공간 기획이나 설계에 참조 텍스트로서 역할을 하는 것이다. 이후 본 연구는 다양한 지역 및 사찰과 궁궐 등으로 그 외연을 확장하고자 하며, 불교 사상 등을 통해 마당의 미학적 측면과 현대적 가치를 다차원적으로 밝히는 방향으로 연구를 이어가고자 한다.

영문 초록

The exploration of Korean traditional culture and Korean beauty has been centered on objects and described in terms of friendliness to nature and simplicity. This paper sees that the characteristics of Korean traditional aesthetics are particularly well revealed in the traditional Korean yard, Madang, which is close to the empty space, and illuminates the unique characteristics of the Madang from the perspective of ‘emptiness’ and ‘openness.’ Existing studies on Madang often cited Lao-tzu’s Mu(無) and Heo(虛) as a theoretical background along with specific metaphors. In this paper, through reading Lao-tzu texts, the philosophical meaning and relationship of the two vocabularies of Mu(無) and Heo(虛) are explored in more depth, and the spiritual and cultural aspects of Madang are lit by examining their meaning as an extension of the emptiness and openness of Madang. The research method was a combination of literature research and field visits. The target sites are Byeongsan Seowon in Andong and the Richest Family in Gyeongju. As a result of the study, the point where Lao-tzu’s Mu(無) and Madang’s emptiness meet was identified as to Mu Wei(無爲)’s garden and versatility of the Madang. The openness of the Madang is directed in two directions, nature and community, and the point where Lao-tzu’s Heo(虛) and the Madang meet was identified as a borrowed scene(借景) and sharing, respectively. The significance of this study is to help understand the value of Madang and the inherent cultural sense inherent in westernized modern Koreans by revealing the aesthetic aspect of Madang, which is gradually disappearing from modern Korean society.
